With the Golden Globes coming up this Sunday and all of the looks we will be talking about for days after, we thought what better time then to ask our own in-house makeup artist her tips for creating gorgeous smoky eyes. Beth Bender is a makeup veteran who has worked with celebrities like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Kate Bosworth, and Nicole Scherzinger just to name a few. One of her most requested celebrity looks are her smoky eyes.

3 Piece Smoky Eye Brush Set

1. The first thing you need are the right brushes. A blender brush, eye shadow brush, and overall shader work best. I like to start by creating an arch in the crease of the eye using the blender brush, and then blending the color into the eyelid with my eyeshadow brush. When I am giving a lesson I use my smoky eye stencil to show my client exactly where to place and apply the color. It also helps to create the shape no matter the eye size.

2. Next using a water-proof eyeliner in black, trace the upper and lower lash line, and finish by gently smudging with a Q-tip.
3. With your eyeshadow brush, press the same color applied to the eyelids into the lower lash line. This will soften the liner, and also create a bumper for the color to bleed into.
4. Apply a pale shimmer shadow to the inner corners of the eyes to lighten the overall effect.
5. And finish your fabulous smoky eyes with 2 generous coats of rich black mascara.
We will see you on the Red Carpet at this years Golden Globes in Hollywood!

Create Soft Smoky Eyes Like A Pro

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 9th August 2010

Celebrity Keri Hilson added a touch of red carpet glamour to her already edgy hair style, by pairing it with soft smoky eyes that were a huge hit. Seen here at the Hollywood premiere of Takers, although somewhat dramatic, they still had a light effect because of how the colors were applied to the eyes.

SoftSmokyEyes

Celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender who gets more requests for smoky eyes than any makeup artist I know, says “rather than applying a charcoal shadow on your entire eyelid, only add it below the crease.” “Finish by adding a shimmery, neutral shadow directly over the darker color, and blending well for a softer version of a smoky eye.”

Beth’s Beauty Tip: Hilson went for a sheer pewter tone that was blended all the way up to her brow bone. The most important thing you can do when creating a look like this on yourself is to also blend the colors well.

Make Up: Get Smoldering Smokey Eyeshadow

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 16th July 2010

Who loved Victoria Beckham’s smudgy, sexy eye shadow as much as we did? Wearing her hair up was a smart move, and gave her eyes even more mileage as a result. Seen here at Range Rover’s 40th Anniversary party in London, this once pop singer has come a long way from her days as a spice girl.

You can get the same look by smudging your eyeliner after applying, and finish using a slate hued eyeshadow. With a soft medium size brush, sweep your color along the lashline, top and bottom making sure to line all the way to the inner and outer corners of your eyes.

The soft effect created is much more alluring, and can even be worn during the day.

Check out the BFF Smoky Eyeshadow Kit and the Good Girl, Gone Bad Palette, both from beth bender beauty.

How To Wear Heavy Black Liner

Posted by Beth on 13th July 2010

Believe it or not, wearing a lush, thick liner around the eyes or just your top lashes is a great beauty look, especially if you’ve only got minutes to spare. Cameron Diaz did us proud at the premiere of her newest flick, Knight and Day in Mexico City.

With her fair complexion, and blonde hair it was easy for her to make an eye-popping statement, and it took all of five minutes to do.

How to get Cameron Diaz's Heavy eyeliner

This is my favorite beauty look for eyes when you don’t have a lot of time, but still want to dress them up. To get Cameron’s look from the premiere, start by using a heavy hand and working the liner deep into your lash line, add some liner on the eyelid as well and smudge slightly using either a small eyeshadow brush or Q-tip.

benefit’s BADgal Waterproof Eyeliner is really the best for this look and will stay on for hours. Styli-Style also makes a great eyeliner with a nice selection of colors, and the price is very attractive as well.

Once you are happy with how your eyeliner looks, and if your lids tend to get shiny, it’s a good idea to set the liner with a powder shadow. I like to go with a contrasting color just to prevent it from looking too hard. So for instance if you do a black liner, try a silver or gunmetal shadow and blend into the liner.

Time it takes: Under five minutes, and it is one sexy look!

Get The Look: Gwyneth Paltrow’s Summer Smoky Eyes

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 9th June 2010

When you think of classic smoky eyes for the evening, naturally you think black, sultry, and smoky, but as the weather begins to get warmer, the dark makeup you wear can seem a little heavy. In Gwyneth Paltrow’s case she was ahead of the smoky eye curve with the perfect alternative at this years CFDA awards.

GwynethP

Instead of black, she went for a soft, taupe smoky eye. The style was still elegant enough for evening, and for her super sparkly gown, but it was also perfect for summer. To get the look at home without a makeup artist, take a few tips from makeup artist beth bender who talked to BSW about the best ways to summer-proof your makeup.

Choose a soft shimmery shadow. beth suggests neutrals, like her Just Kidding Smoky Eye Kit, such as those Gwyneth wore, or a palette in violet’s or indigo, like the New GNO Eyeshadow Trio.

Use an eyeliner in the same hue as your shadow. Rim your upper lashline with the pencil and after applying your shadow, use a smudge brush to blend the two together.

Don’t forget mascara. To complete Gwyneth’s dramatic eyes finish by adding a rich black mascara, which will thicken your lashes and stay put all day long in the summer heat. I like Covergirls Lash Blast Mascara. It’s affordable, and gives your lashes amazing length, and thickness with one swipe.

Best Tips For How To Brighten Eyes Instantly

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 13th November 2009

Wow check out this celebrity look!

Working with beth on a daily basis has been such a dream come true. In the short time I have been with her, I have learned so many things about beauty, and how to apply makeup to enhance your own features and look your best. Like concealer, who knew there were so many ways in which to apply it, use it, and really make it work double-duty!

“The skin is such an important part when creating a look, or doing your makeup, and if it looks off then everything else will too”, says beth.  Take for instance Freida Pinto seen here at the BAFTA LA Britannia Awards in Los Angeles.

Best Eye Brightening Concealers

“With Freida you have to be extra careful with her under eye area. One of the biggest mistakes women do is to over apply concealer to cover up the darker tones. This is usually inherent in Indian complexions, but fair complexions, as well as women with yellow undertones can have the same problem.”

To avoid this beauty mess, beth’s favorite beauty tip for removing all signs of darkness or discoloration underneath the eyes, is to apply a color corrector first, and then add your concealer. For Freida a peach tone is perfect and will even out any darker tones, as well as brightening and giving the complexion a beautiful glow.  If your skin suffers from dark circles, or dark spots, use a Yellow tone to even out any dark spots or uneveness.

correctors-2

For redness from acne, or Rosacea, use a shade in Mint. This will also work for anyone who has had a laser treatment or chemical peel to cover the redness. To find the perfect shade just for you check out Studio Direct Cosmetics, they have a huge selection of corrective concealers, and they are very affordable too. Once you’ve taken care of this, then apply your concealer. beth bender beauty’s newest under eye concealer It’s in the eyes, will not only firm the skin under the eyes, but also minimize the appearance of wrinkles, while leaving the skin looking dewy, and radiant.

Get Leighton Meester’s Sleek Smoky Eyes

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 6th November 2009

Leighton Meester was all eyes at a recent benefit for the New York Public Library. Aside from her stunning dress, a sophisticated, sleek take on dark smudgy eyes was the look created for the red carpet event. With just a hint of glitter and shimmer to bring out the beautiful shape of Leighton’s eyes.

Get Leighton Meester's Perfect Smoky Eyes

To get Leighton’s look we asked our beauty expert, and creator of the Get in Line Smoky Eye and Stencil Kit to give us her tips on how to create. “This is such a beautiful look on and off the red carpet, and yes ladies you can do it yourself.” To do, start by rimming the eyes with a waterproof black liner like benefit’s BADGal in black, next using a metallic plum shadow apply with a medium size eyeshadow brush into the crease, but not too far above. Use a smoky eye stencil if you are unsure of the shape and placement.

With a slightly fuller brush, sweep a shimmery cobalt blue or blue-violet powder across the entire lid for a faded effect, and sweep along the bottom lashline as well. Curling your lashes will add a touch of glamour, and finish with two generous coats of black mascara. “I have been loving Maybelline’s Pulse Perfection Mascara. Each time I use it, I am amazed at how stunning it makes the lashes look”.

Get Eva Longoria’s Sexy Smoky Eyes

Posted by Beth on 25th October 2009

It’s usually rare to find a beauty product that looks good on everyone, that is unless you’re counting clear lip balm, or lip gloss. Silver eye shadow on the other hand is surprisingly beautiful with any skin tone or eye color. It’s easy to do and a if you use a shimmer shadow you can even use your fingers to apply, and finish with a brush if you need to.  I first started using my fingers to apply color, especially shimmers while working with Bobbi Brown. It is a fabulous way to create a depth that you can’t always get by using an eyeshadow brush.

To create Eva Longoria’s look, first start by using a silvery gray shimmer and patting it on with either your index or middle finger to give your lids a built-in spotlight. This also create a perfect foundation for layering darker colors if you desire.

Get Eva Longoria's sexy smoky eyes

Then with a gray shadow apply to the crease of eye with a blender brush, or short eyeshadow brush concentrating on the outer corner of eyes. Eva gets it just right by keeping the focus of silvery shadow on the lids and blending with a matte shadow in a slightly darker shade in the crease. For eyes that command added drama, use a gel eyeliner in black and line along the lash line extending just beyond your lashes. Make the line thicker at the ends for a cat like look.

Get Bronzed, Luminous Skin In Minutes

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 24th October 2009

Who knew a reality show like The Hills could create such a superstar out of Lauren Conrad, but as she showed us at a recent event in Hollywood, not only does she walk the walk, she looks the part too.

How to Get beautiful bronzed skin

Seen here with her signature cat eye, and a beautiful radiant glow that with the right products anyone can do themselves. The trick says Beth Bender of beth bender beauty, “is to start by smoothing a few drops of a liquid foundation over your entire face, but the secret is to use a shade slightly darker than your natural skin tone.” Make sure your skin is properly hydrated before adding your foundation, or you may end up with an uneven face.

To finish the look use a shimmery translucent powder, and with a powder brush lightly apply to the face, paying special attention to the top of cheekbones, bridge of nose and chin. The effect will give your complexion plenty of color and plenty of light.

How To Create Smoky Eyeliner in Soft Lilac

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 30th September 2009

Not every lined eye that makes a beauty statement needs to be dark in order to do so. Just look at the always beautiful Jessica Stroup, seen here at the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party, who shows us that a heavily pigmented shadow in Lilac can be just as dramatic.

Jessica Stroup in Sexy Lilac EyelinerTo get the look, makeup artist beth bender of beth bender beauty suggests wetting a tapered eyeliner brush first and then dipping into your shadow. To apply, start at the outer eye and move brush along the top lashline, and then below the bottom. For a thicker line add more color to the liner already there, extend beyond eye, and up for an elongated look.

To create a cat eye in Lilac beth recommends using her Cat Eyeliner Stencil and finish by adding an eyeliner sealant so the color stays on for hours. For extra definition you can apply a tight black liner to the top and bottom, and smudge slightly. benefit’s BADgal liner waterproof in black is a favorite of beth’s, that also happens to be a big favorite of mine as well.
