At an Art of Elysium event in Cannes, Rachel Bilson showed off her signature sexy kohl-rimmed eyes. They always look perfect, and there is never a smudge in sight. If you’re thinking of going for this sultry look in the coming months, remember these tips for keeping it smudge-free.

First, if your lids are shiny, apply an eyeshadow primer along your top and bottom lashline before applying. A translucent powder is great for setting once you are  finished. You can also follow the steps below to create Rachel’s kohl liner which I have done a number of times and my eyes always look great.

To get the look, start by lining the rim of eyes and dotting in between lashes using a waterproof eyeliner pencil like benefit’s BADGal  Waterproof liner in black. This is probably the best waterproof liner for this type of look. You can smudge or leave alone, it’s up to you. Next, using an eyeliner stencil, place the stencil above your eye and with a small shadow brush apply color along line. Remove the stencil and repeat the same underneath the eye using the bottom eyeliner stencil.

To create a thicker line at the outer eye, go over the liner starting at the middle of eye and out towards the end. Set with an eyeliner sealant, or gel liner especially if it’s a hot day, or your eyelids tend to get shiny fast. To complete “Rachel Bilson’s Kohl-lined Eyes”, apply at least one generous coat of black mascara, starting at the base of lashes and working your way up to the ends . Dianna Agron was not playing when it came to her ‘come hither me eyes’ at the 2010 FOX Upfront after party in New York City.  The focus was definitely on the eyes—but not in a smoky way. Instead she opted for 2 sets of lash strips layered on top of each other, carefully applied by her makeup artist.

The goal was for the lips to pick up on Dianna’s red dress, but still ensure the eyes had impact, and without a doubt they did! Medium black lashes were used to get this sexy effect, and before applying, they were trimmed so they did not extend beyond Dianna’s natural lashline.

“Stacking the lashes is definitely the key to creating this look on the eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist beth bender, who has lent her lash skills to many a super model backstage during fashion week. bender also says that applying a coat of mascara first, gives the bed of lashes even more density making them look even thicker.

Celebrities love their smoky eyes, and some won’t even leave the house without them. The good news is you can save the dark smoldering colors for night, and still do a gorgeous eye in softer hues for day. Emma Stone had no problems at all turning heads with her soft plum and violet lids.

THE LOOK: Emma Stone has a tawny complexion, so it made sense to choose a plum shadow, and to give her eyes an extra pop.

WHY IT WORKS: It’s a study in contrasts, Emma chose a bold color and applied a soft coat of it all around her emerald eyes. The result was perfection!

Heavy black liner is making a big beauty splash again, and at the Sherlock Holmes premiere in New York City, Rachel McAdams showed off the power of a little black liner in a big eye popping way.

To get high impact eyes the easy way, start by sharpening a creamy black pencil and lining along your top and bottom lashline. Even on those hot summer days a sexy black liner is a quick beauty task to pull your look together and get you to the party on time! To prevent smudging try a waterproof eyeliner like Benefit’s BADgal Waterproof Eyeliner in Black. It has a smudge tip on one end to soften the line and give it an even more smoldering effect.

To create the look with ease and give your eyes a smooth, continuous black line like Emma Stone seen here, pull the skin taut from the outer corner of your eye with one hand, and with the other hand, gently draw a thin line from the outer to the inner corner. The pencil should be as close to the lashline as possible so there is no space between the eyelid and lashes.

Use the same technique to get a thin black line along your lower lash line as well. If your eyes are smaller make sure and taper the liner so it fades from the center of eye towards the inner part of eye.

Once your liner is done you can finish by setting with a colored eyeshadow underneath and above the eye. For perfect eyeliner that takes seconds to do use an eyeliner stencil on the top and bottom. Simply hold the stencil in the desired place along the lashline and sweep across the eye with your shadow.

It’s that simple and it looks super sexy!

Julia, Julia, Julia, how do you do it? Your red carpet hair and makeup always looks beautiful and you make it look so effortless. Everyone is always asking me how you get your eyes that are already so big, look even bigger. Well, eyeliner is a definite must, but it’s how you apply it that can take your eyes from 0 to 360, and major glam appeal in a matter of minutes.

The trick to creating Julia’s dreamy eyes, is to line as close to the lashline as possible. Starting at the center of eye begin lining and make it slightly thicker as you get to the end of eye. If your eyes are bigger you can line slightly closer to the inner corner of eye. I like to use my eyeliner stencils for an easy application and usually have my clients do the same when I am not available to do their makeup. They are easy to use, and in seconds you can create perfect eyeliner, and that uber-popular cat eye everyone loves.

You can add a soft shadow a shade deeper then your skin tone in the crease to create a deep set look. This is key because it creates a shadowy effect that makes your peepers and Julia’s look a bit deeper set, giving them that dreamy-eyed thing she does so well.
