An Easy Way To Get Perfect Cat Eye Liner–No Flick Involved

Was Pat McGrath’s super simple trick for getting the cat eye liner on the Valentino spring 2012 couture runway so perfect?

Drawing little squares in the outside corners of the eyelids with a black eyeliner pencil and fill in. Done. No wobbly flick!  Maybe for some, but using a Cat Eyeliner Stencil works too, and you can forgo the squares all together.  But don’t take our word, see for yourself…

The square, not pointed, winged out liner does create a slightly edgier look but it’s not so different. It’s still sexy, yes. It’s still cheekbone-enhancing and retro in all the right ways, yes.  Here’s a look at the soft, pretty way the liner was filled in and blended. Seems like a little bit of shadow might have been involved, but it may have also been just a smudge of the liner too.

And here’s the finished look on the runway. McGrath told WWD, “They really wanted the face to be very bare, and for it to be just about that square and that perfected skin,”.  Job well done Pat! It’s gorgeous. Oh, in case you can’t tell, the brows were also lightened.

This picture above almost looks like the liner is winged. In any case you can create the liner with the cat eye stencil, and then square it off with a Q-tip.  Very easy, and very quick.
Who here has trouble getting their cat eye flick perfect? Do you think you’d try the squares technique, or do you think you’ll opt for a cat eye stencil?  Do you like this overall beauty look?

How to get Emma Stone’s signature cat eyeliner

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 19th January 2012

In a short amount of time, Emma Stone has managed to impress us not only on-screen but on the red carpet as well.

how to get emma stone's cat eyeliner look

Her peach Calvin Klein dress from last year’s Golden Globes, loved!  And that pink-on-red Giambattista Valli sweater/skirt combo have been etched into our minds for good.  Though she’s known for getting it just right it in the fashion department, it’s also hard not to notice her on-point hair and makeup choices, too.

When we met up with the “The Amazing Spider-Man” star last November, we claimed that Stone single-handedly “pioneered the hot pink lip trend.”  To that, she said she was honored.  Nonetheless, her take on beauty is always a combination of smart, sexy and cool, mostly because she’s mastered a formula that works for her: stand out cat-eye liner, and a bright lip.  Simple enough, and still so striking.

We’ve teamed up with celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender who’s broken down the steps behind Stone’s go-to look.

Cat eyes are easier than ever.  The days of using a credit card to achieve a straight line are over, and  the quicker, more modern way, is to use a cat eye stencil.  It creates a cat eye in a thick or thin version depending on your personal desire and fits any eye shape.  Most importantly it’s a huge time saver, and for those who count every minute, you will be pleasantly surprised.

To start, place the stencil marked “Cat Eye” over your eye and hold in place.  Holding it slightly above eyelid for a thicker line, and closer to the eyelid for a thinner line.  In this picture of Emma you would hold stencil above eyelid.

Next fill in with a powder shadow using a medium size eyeshadow brush that is slightly damp, and sweep color up into point of cat eye.  Remove stencil and repeat on the other eye. Make sure to wipe stencil with a tisuue before doing the other eye.

If you do not want to smoke your cat eye as seen here on Emma, then just leave as is.  You can apply an eyeliner sealant or gel liner over the powder/cat eye to prevent bleeding and keep it on for hours.

To give the cat eye a smoky finish, simply take your eyeshadow brush, and using a lighter shade sweep along the top of cat eye.  Highlight the brow bone with a contrasting color in a light beige or pale shimmery white and sweep the same lighter shade underneath the eye as well.

You can add a waterproof eyeliner pencil to the inside rim and dot in between bottom lashes before smudging slightly.  Mascara in black is a must.  Cheek and lips should remain neutral.

Golden Globe Beauty–Zooey Deschanel’s Mod Cat Eyeliner Look

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 16th January 2012

get zooey deschanel's cat eyeliner look from the Golden Globes 2012

At the 2012 Golden Globes Awards, Best Actress nominee Zooey Deschanel won our hearts with her mod cat-eyes courtesy of makeup artist Jorjee Douglass. Using Rimmel products, Douglass blended black and silver shadows along the lid to create the swooping shape, concentrating black shadow in the crease for dimension.

A back-and-forth swipe of a black gel liner along the top lashline, and a few feathery strokes of black pencil along the bottom were the final touches.  As was a generous coating of rich mascara to give Zooey’s eye that retro look we are still talking about today.  To achieve perfect cat eyeliner without the help of a professional makeup artist Jorjee suggests the Get in Line Eyeliner Stencil Kit from beth bender beauty.

How To Create Metallic Cat Eyeliner For The Holidays

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 19th December 2011

Bright Blue Cat-Eyeliner

MAKEUP HOW-TO: To create this look, celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender first traced navy pencil along Dennings’s upper lash lines, extending it into an upward swoosh ¼ inch past eyes.  Then she layered a matte royal blue powder on top, concentrating the color at the crease and blending outward to fatten the wing.  Bender buffed a bright blue metallic cream over the center of lids “to attract light,” then slicked a rosy lipstick onto lips.

BROW NOTE: For a sleek finish, Bender spritzed hairspray on a disposable mascara wand and brushed it through the brows. “It’s an easy way to keep them in place,” she says.

EYELINER NOTE: For an easier way to creating the cat eye look seen here, try using a cat eye stencil in a lighter shade first to get the shape and then apply your color.

A Soft Cat Eyeliner Makeup Look To Try On Yourself

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 1st December 2011

When you think cat-eye, images of dramatic liquid liner come to mind. We love Olivia Palermo’s softer, less intense take at the British Fashion Awards in London.

Using a muted palette of browns and plum, Palermo’s lids are layered with shadows and extend out only slightly on the edges. The trick is in smudging the  shadow along the lower lashline and drawing it upwards towards the tail of the eyebrow, which lends a shapely but less dramatic effect than a true cat-eye liner look.  Create the cat eye shape with an eyeliner stencil first for a more precise line and then smudge with your brush.

Hottest Beauty Look Now: Graphic Black Eye Shadow And Cat Eyeliner

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 20th October 2011

Black never goes out of style in fashion—or beauty.  This season, the sexy shade was used in a variety of ways that ranged from soft and sexy to smudgy and cool. Here are the hottest ways to wear it this fall.

For the eye makeup at Moschino, makeup artist Tom Pecheux mimicked the shape of the sunglasses in the collection, creating an exaggerated cat-eye.  To create the perfect shape, Pecheux drew the outline with black pencil and filled it in with matte black shadow, up to and over the crease.  Next, he added a shimmery black shade just on the lids that caught the light, evoking the effect of lenses in the sun.  “This is a more friendly, less aggressive way to wear black shadow, because it’s not so heavy or overdone,” he said.

Another way to create the cat-eye look on yourself is by using a cat eyeliner stencil. You can achieve the exact same eye makeup look simply by placing the cat eye stencil over your eyelid and filling in will color shadow. It’s that easy.

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 17th January 2011

The Golden Globes may be over, but there are still a few awards to be handed out–the beauty awards!  This year was all about serious eyeliner, peach hues on the cheeks and lips, and carpet stopping updo’s.  Check out our favorite looks for the best hair and makeup in each category.

Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama: Michelle Williams
The only thing standing out more than her blonde pixie do was her radiant skin. Add to the mix her thick, Twiggy-like lashes, absolutely perfect eyeliner, and coral lips which won her a huge BSW “Love it!”.
emma_stone_golden_globes.jpg

Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy, or Musical went to Emma Stone. Spray tans were red carpet popular last night but not all made the cut. In Emma Stone’s case her bronze, peachy look was just right, and who could resist her uber-sexy cat eyes. Her blonde locks though have been getting mixed reviews, but we love the look and think it should stick around.
mila_kunis_golden_globes.jpg
Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture went to Mila Kunis, whose deeply lined eyes, coral lips and cheeks, and retro updo took top honors, even if she didn’t walk away with a Globe.
piper_perabo_golden_globes.jpg
Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Television Series, Drama, was a hands down Piper Perabo. We almost didn’t recognize her. Her slick ponytail, (loved!) and gorgeous red lips definitely got our attention which looked effortless and chic.
claire_danes_golden_globes.jpg
Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Claire Danes whose embrace with the real Temple Grandin proved her to be a class act. Her soft bronzed smoky eyes, gold-flecked pink cheeks, and smooth updo were pretty fantastic too.
kelly_macdonald_golden_globes.jpg
Best Hair and Makeup on an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Kelly Macdonald. Don’t you just love this look? With her perfect red lips and softly sculpted waves, for a second we really did feel like it was the 20s’ and she was an old-Hollywood screen siren.
