How To Get Perfect Smoky Eyes For Summer

The Perfect Smoky eyes anytime of the year can be a challenge when you are trying to re-create something from a magazine, or the runway. The trick to achieving them not only requires the right eye shadows, but also the right tools.

A good brush set is a good place to start. You really only need a few to do a smoky eye. The first is a full size shadow brush for all over color, or to apply color to the eyelid, the second is a blender brush for applying color to the crease of eye, and the third is a smudge brush that softens the color (especially under the eye) and gives them their alluring look.

Once you have selected and purchased your brushes, keeping them in good condition will depend on how you care for them, and will also play a very big role in the actual application of your smoky eyes. Brushes that are used everyday, and more than once, should be cleaned at least twice a month.

To clean your brushes, you can buy a brush cleanser like Bobbi Brown’s which is the best, or use a gentle shampoo, and using just a drop placed in the palm of your hand, dampen your brush, and swirl it around into the shampoo. Rinse under luke warm water until the color runs off the brush. Try to get only the brush hairs wet, and squeeze out any excess water before placing your brush on a shelf so that the hairs are not touching, and are extended beyond the width of shelf.

Get Sexy Bronze Eyes Like A Pro

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 20th September 2009

Jennifer Garner is no newbie when it comes to smoky eyes. She has had her eyes done by the best of the best when it comes to makeup artists, but, “what’s a girl to do when she doesn’t have the luxury of an on call artist?” Just ask beth bender of beth bender beauty and beauty editor of BSW. Most of my clients all have a Get in Line Smoky Eye and Eyeliner Kit that they use whenever they can’t get me. It really is the next best thing when you want to do a smoky eye or a cat eye.

Especially with this season’s trends being more about naughty than nice. Who doesn’t want a sexy cat eyeliner, or sultry smoky eye, both of which can be very, very, naughty. And while we just adore Jennifer Garner’s girl-next-door looks here at BSW, we were all over her sultry, sexy eyeshadow at The Invention of Lying premiere in Toronto.

Get Jennifer Garner's Sexy Smoky Eyes

To try the look, beth suggests covering the eyelids with a coppery metallic shadow, like the SGB Palette, use the smoky eye stencil for the proper placement, and then finish by dusting a gunmetal gray, like Double-O-Silver, both from beth bender beauty in the crease and at the lashline. Sounds easy, and it is.

Now go and create some naughty eyes please!

Smoky Blue Eyes and Nude Lips For Spring

Posted by Te-see on 26th March 2009

030409_marley02_400x4001

Beauty trends this spring are nothing short of bold and daring. Smoky eyes in bright blues, hot pink lips, and perfectly applied black eyeliner, coral lips and sunkissed eyes in golds and bronze tones are all the rage. The question is, can anyone wear these looks, and the answer is absolutely! Just take your cue from Marley Shelton who looks beautiful in her bright blue smoky eyes and soft nude lips.

My sister Beth, and our in-house expert when it comes to beauty, trends, and smoky eyes, says to get this look, start by tracing your upper and lower lash lines with a navy eyeliner. Then using a small eye shadow brush, smudge the line making sure to give the liner a good buff to create a base for the shadow to stick to. Next using a matte blue eyeshadow (makeup forever matte blue eyeshadow; www.makeupforever.com), layer the color on top of the liner (you can use a smoky eye stencil for placement of color), and focus on the center of lids. “Make sure not to go up past the crease, especially with a color as bright as this”, says Beth.

Finish with a pale pink lipstick or gloss (Liquid lip glaze in Paris is Burning from beth bender beauty, $16; bethbenderbeauty.com)

Get Smoky Eyes With Silver Eyeshadow

Posted by Beth on 22nd March 2009

It’s rare to come across a makeup product that looks good on everyone, that is unless you’re counting clear lip balm, or lip gloss. Silver eye shadow on the other hand is surprisingly beautiful with any skin tone or eye color. It’s easy to do and a if you use a shimmer shadow you can even use your fingers to apply, and blend with a brush is you need to. Something I started doing when I worked with Bobbi, and haven’t stopped since. Use a pewter or silvery gray shimmer and give your lids a built-in spotlight.

Kristen Stewart gets it just right by keeping the focus of silvery shadow on the lids and blending with a matte shadow in a lighter shade above the crease. For eyes that have an extra pop, use a gel eyeliner and line close to the lashline extending just beyond your lashes. Make the line thicker  at the ends for a cat like look.

Get Sunkissed Smoky Eyes For Spring

Posted by Te-see on 16th March 2009

lovethoseeyes1031909_reed_400x400

Spring is right around the corner but celebrities like Nikki Reed are already sporting gorgeous sunkissed eyes. Our in-house expert and my sister Beth suggests layering your eyeshadows to create intensity and depth. Start with a lighter shade like a warm gold, beige, or apricot, and then add your darker colors.

Shimmers work best, or a combination of flat and shimmer shadows. You can use a blender brush to apply color to the crease if you are doing a smoky eye, or just use your fingers and apply directly to the eyelid. Either look is really gorgeous. To create an easy and still perfect smoky eye, Beth recommends her Smoky Eyeliner Stencil. It fits any eye shape and saves you a lot of time and mess.

Beth’s Beauty Tip: You can make your eyes pop like Nikki’s by using a black waterproof eyeliner pencil like BADgal from Benefit, and lining the inside rims of your eyes. Smudge with a Q-tip or brush along the lashline for a soft and still sexy look.

Get Sultry Smoky Eyes Like A Pro

Posted by Beth on 4th March 2009

insidersecrets2

021809_mischka_400x400

For the Badgley Mischka fashion show, models pranced down the cat walk sporting gorgeous eyes created by artist and makeup extraordinaire Tom Pecheux.  His inspiration was a cocktail look that was slightly less formal than what you would expect for a red carpet. Not too dramatic, but definitely a look not to go unnoticed.

Beth’s Beauty Tip: When creating a look like this keep the skin simple and fresh using a matte or sheer foundation depending on your complexion, and a soft pale pink blush for a hint of color on the cheeks. To create a dreamy effect on the eyes use a combination of burgundy and amber shimmer shadows, accenting the top and bottom lashline with a coffee-brown pencil. Use a nude lip color and a swipe of sheer lavender gloss to finish the look.

GET RICH SILVER SMOKY EYES

Posted by Beth on 31st January 2009

I just love this look for evening and using rich colors is a ravishing new take on the smoky eye. Lining your eyes with a shimmery navy or charcoal eye pencil and then filling in your lids with a silver/gunmetal shimmer shadow and smudging them is a quick and very sexy way to create these eyes. I love to use my fingers to apply the shimmers and then blend with a medium size eyeshadow or blender brush. The shimmer shadow will also set the look and prevent the eyeliner from bleeding.

My smoky eye insider tip when creating this look is to keep the color below the crease line on your lids. You can clean the upper lid with a Q-tip and a tiny, tiny drop of eye cream.

Smoky Eyes in Shades of Pretty Purple

Posted by Beth on 30th January 2009

Queen Latifah’s makeup is a classic look with a hint of color, and I am loving her purple eyes.  Using an eggplant shade of purple, celebrity artist Sam Fine applied this as the dominant color, which he said is much easier to wear than lilac. I have to agree with him there, especially on Ms. Latifah.

To create this sultry look on yourself start by applying the eggplant shadow to the crease of the eye using a blender brush. Sweep the same color underneath as well for definition. To open up the eyes apply a pale beige or pale pink to the lid and blend into eggplant shadow. A pale opalescent shadow works beautifully too. Finish by lining the eyes on top with a gel eyeliner in Onyx and if you feel so inclined add a few lash clusters before your mascara. Black of course:)

SMOKY EYE SHIMMERS THAT SIZZLE

Posted by admin on 5th August 2008

Charlize Theron’s Red Carpet Beauty

get the look

This dazzling beauty always looks gorgeous on and off the Red Carpet. Her Style is sexy and sophisticated and her make-up is always flawless. Bronze and golden shimmers for the eyes have been seen everywhere from celebrity luncheons here in Hollywood to almost every movie premiere this spring and summer. The easiest and most cost effective way to create these sexy eyes is to opt for an eyeshadow kit that contains all of the eye colors needed.

To get the look beth suggests using the Get in Line Smoky Eye Trio in SGB, a must have eyeshadow palette for creating eyes as sexy as Charlize’s. Brush the Golden Beige shade onto the eyelid and contour the crease of eye with the deep bronze shimmer. Mix the deep bronze and golden tan together and line underneath the eye as seen here on Charlize.

For sultry eyes that are sure to turn a few heads use a Gel Liner in Onyx, and line the eyes with a flat tapered brush. Make sure to line as close to the lashline as possible. Finish with a rich black mascara and don’t forget the cheeks and lips. A soft peach cheek color with gold undertones goes perfectly with your sunkissed eyes.
