The Best Tips For How To Cover Up Your Roots

If your roots are showing and your next appointment with a colorist is still weeks away, these tricks will make them much less noticeable.

•  Play the part. When your hair is down, your part is the biggest giveaway for roots. A messy part helps disguise the stark difference in color. Start by styling your hair as usual, then flip your head over and come up slowly, so all your hair hangs forward. Push your hair out of your face gently, letting it fall naturally. Your part will be uneven, and your roots won’t stand out as much.

•  Add volume. If you wear your hair up, pulling it back tightly brings attention to the contrast in color. Keep it loose with lots of volume and texture instead. First, tease your roots a bit—this creates a little height and pushes your color closer to your scalp. Make a deep side part and gather your hair into a messy chignon at the nape of your neck.

•  Try a Braid. Little braids bring all the colors together and create shadows, so dark roots look like low-lights. Try a thin braid along your hairline, or twist sections of hair on either side of your part and secure them with bobby pins.

•  Cover up. Root-touch-up kits work when you apply them correctly. Whether it’s a mascara wand or a brush, hold your hair up straight and paint in an upward motion from the roots. Then smudge the dye down into the hair shaft with your fingers so it blends.

How To Create Subtle Colored Eye Shadow

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 12th November 2010

When it comes to beauty, Carey Mulligan is the reigning queen of clean and understated beauty choices, but at the Britannia Awards in Century City, she proved that wearing colored shadows can be chic, and sleek.

Carey

With the help of makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, Mulligan paired a translucent sweep of blue shadow along her top lid, and a soft dusting of yellow gold along the bottom lashline. A rich onyx gel eyeliner was applied along the lashline, and extended ever so slightly at the outer ends. To finish the look, Eisdell coated her lashes twice to complete the overall effect.

Jennifer Lopez’s Smoldering Pink Eye Shadow Look

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 29th October 2010

Jennifer Lopez looks really pretty in pinks at the Carousel Of Hope Ball over the weekend. Everything you would expect from someone who has a reputation for playing the diva.

Jennifer

Jennifer

As usual her smoky eyes were glamorous, lovely and flirty all in one, and definitely got my attention.

Take a closer look:

Jennifer

1026-jennifer-lopez-eye-makeup-close-pink_bd.jpgNot ot go off point but take a look at all of the shading going on to thin her nose. In person some don’t even recognize the pop star without makeup. Hard to believe that such soft colors could create such an impact, but with her ultra false lashes added to the mix this look is unstoppable.

To get the look, Celebrity Makeup Artist Beth Bender suggests starting with a hint of brown shadow along your lashline, and then layering a pink beige shimmer all the way around. The color gets a bit lighter and more metallic in the inner corners, with very little shading. A very easy look to do on yourself, and the end result is simply radiant. Once again Jenny from the hood doesn’t disappoint.

Check out the Camille Smoky Eyeshadow Kit to get this look.

Cindy Bokma Says Banish The Frizzies!

Posted by Cindy Bokma on 18th October 2010

Avon

I’d be a broken record if I continued to lament over my frizzy locks. One thing that’s really helped me is using shampoo that doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulfates.

And I’m always on the lookout for products that promise to banish the frizzies. Avon Advance Techniques Lotus Shield definitely helps. A little bit is all I need, maybe the size of a gumball. I rub it into the lower third of my hair and comb it thru. My hair is smoother and way less frizzy. I add just a touch of some kind of hair oil to keep my locks silky after blow drying.

Here’s how it works- “The key to controlling frizz is to control water absorption. Avon’s new lotus-inspired technology adds a water resistant layer to the hair, preventing excess moisture from entering the hair shaft.” I think this product is a bargain at $12!

Next is Fantastic Sam’s Nourishing Serum with Argon Oil. I was pleasantly

sams

surprised at how well this one worked.  Helps with controlling frizz, adds a little nourishment with the argon oil and keeps moisture locked in. Also notable is the Thermal Guard, a spray on formula made to protect hair from heat styling. My hair definitely needs this as I heat style every day.

Ouidad’s products are formulated for people with curly hair. While mine is only half curl, half sort of straight, I find the products work well to keep hair smooth and soft. I especially like the Climate Control Gel. This product was a necessity during  a recent hot spell here in SoCal.

oui1This lightweight gel reduces frizz with “Heat-activated European Wheat Protein that has a shielding effect on hair that breathes with the humidity, protecting the hair shaft and preventing hair from expanding.”  I use it after towel drying my hair.

When I get out of the shower and my hair is still quite wet, I apply the Moisture Lock Leave-In Conditioner, mostly to the ends of my hair. This gives my dry hair extra hydration without weighing it down.  This one “seals the cuticle layer to prevent frizz and encourage healthier hair and scalp.”

Trend to Try Now: Two-Tone Eye Makeup

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 18th October 2010

Contrasting colors on the eyelids makes for subtle drama and a super-duper effect. Here, copper shadow brightens eyes as a deep plum elongates them. Oooooh pretty.
EmilyEyes
To Get The Look: Start by applying your plum shadow to the outer corners of the lids, and blending it out into a wing shape. Next, using a shimmery copper shadow, apply to the inner corners of eyes, and blend into the creases and up to the brow bones.
EyeshadowsFall
Blending the copper shadow is the trick to finishing this look. You can soften the color as you move closer to the brow bone using a Q-tip.
To finish, sweep your copper shadow under the lower lashes and don’t forget mascara. Two to three coats of black will do just fine.

Contour Your Cheeks & Add Depth With Bronzer and Blush

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 14th October 2010

Lost’s Emilie de Ravin seen here shows us how combining a cream bronzer and blush together can give your everyday makeup a more polished look, while enhancing your own features.

EmilyCheeks
“Layering bronzer and blush has a double benefit”
say celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender. Why it Works: “The bronzer brings out the cheekbones, and makes the face more three-dimensional, while the blush gives a beautiful glow.”

Get The Look: Start with a lightweight foundation first. This will give you a neutral canvas to work with (try Miracle Skin Transform). Then using your fingers apply a cream bronzer starting at the center of cheeks, and working color along cheekbones and up into the hair line. Blend the color so it dissapears into your skin for a flawless finish.

Next, using a cream blush in a soft pink, layer the color along the apples of the cheeks, right on top of the bronzer.

To set the color you can either apply a translucent powder, or a pink power blush in the same hue.

Jennifer Aniston Is Better Than Ever At 41!

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 12th March 2010

40 is definitely the new 20! Just look at Jennifer Aniston if you don’t believe us. The beautiful actress just turned 41, and boy does she look amazing!  Seen here on the cover of this month’s issue of “W” magazine. She joins her co-star Gerard Butler, in the upcoming comedy “The Bounty Hunter.”

Jennifer Aniston & Gerard Butler

The two are rumored to be dating, and were spotted cuddling at The Golden Globes, but we have learned not to read into that too much since we know for a fact the Gerard is quite the ladies man. Jen attributes her rock solid body to yoga which she has been doing for quite sometime. We only hope her golden glow is from a bottle, and not from baking in the sun.

Photographer Steven Klein, who also shot Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s blissful photo spread right after the Aniston-Pitt split, also shot the photos of Aniston and Butler. Hmm….coincidence?
