Don’t be fooled by the gorgeous makeup on celebrities- remember, they have a Makeup Artist standing just feet from them to keep it all in place.  That’s what we do- that’s why they look flawless.  But we’ve all learned lots of tricks along the way to help make our job easier.

Here are a few of those techniques that might make your beauty routine less frustrating.

My eyeliner always ends up smearing under my eyes- anyway to make it stay put?

Yep!  IF you’re using a pencil, ALWAYS buy a waterproof pencil.  Keep in mind, no pencil is completely waterproof, but some can be very water resistant.  My favorite Indelible Liner glides on smoothly, yet resists creasing and smearing.  And make sure you prep the skin PRIOR to applying.

Almost every eyeliner will run when it mixes with the natural oils of the skin, or with tears, so prep the area first by swiping a little pressed powder on a small Angle Brush over the area to completely absorb any oils left on your skin or moisture from your eye cream.  After applying, lock in your color with a matching eyeshadow.

Dab a little of the color over the liner with a small Angle Brush- this will set the color in just like powder sets your foundation.  These extra tips should make your liner STAY PUT for hours!

I’ve changed brands and types of foundation constantly yet, I always get the same results- my foundation always looks like its blotchy and gone just 2 hours after I put it on- what do I do?

No matter what type of foundation you are using, lock it in with Foundation Primer. The weightless serum contains anti-oxidants that will seal in moisture, leaving your skin silky smooth and ready for foundation application.  It acts as a barrier between natural skin oils so they won’t interfere with your favorite foundation.

What is the best way to choose the right color foundation?

Contrary to the belief of many women behind the Cosmetic Counters in the department stores, the LAST place you test foundation colors is the inside of your arm, unless of course that’s where you intend to wear it!  I have never understood that concept.  The BEST place to try it is on your jawline.  The area that will blend between your face and your neck.  Now, keep in mind, most Makeup Artists never use 1 color on anyone.  When doing a makeup, I typically blend 2-3 colors to get the “ideal” color.

A lighter color down the T-zone will highlight that area bringing attention to the center of your face.  A darker color on the lower part of your face from cheekbones down might help to contour a full face, and the same color along the jawline might help to conceal a full chin.  For your ideal color; try several colors along your jawline, the one that disappears into your skin is your ideal shade.

We love how the rest of her makeup doesn’t take away from her perfect skin, and how her graphic haircut accents it.

“To keep your surface blemish-free, a regular skincare routine is key” says Bender.  Even if your skin is having an off-day, you can fake a perfect canvas like Knightley’s by using a foundation primer with an added luminizer.  “DuWop’s DoubleGlow7 is one that I am constantly grabbing for whenever I am on a shoot.  The brightening properties will give you a lit-from-within glow while delivering a smooth and even appearance. How to Make Winged-Out Eyeliner Look Modern-Retro

When it comes to beauty, Carey Mulligan is the reigning queen of clean and understated beauty choices, but at the Britannia Awards in Century City, she proved that wearing colored shadows can be chic, and sleek.

With the help of makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, Mulligan paired a translucent sweep of blue shadow along her top lid, and a soft dusting of yellow gold along the bottom lashline. A rich onyx gel eyeliner was applied along the lashline, and extended ever so slightly at the outer ends. To finish the look, Eisdell coated her lashes twice to complete the overall effect.

American Idol Alumni, Katharine McPhee has returned to her dark locks. After transforming herself into a platinum blonde last August for her album Unbroken, McPhee went back to brunette two days before her 26th birthday on March 26th. She’ll play a brown haired girl-next-door pharmaceutical rep in the NBC comedy pilot The Pink House, which starts shooting this month.

“It’s always nice to have a reason to go back,” McPhee tells BSW of the change, which is a rich shade of brown that’s a little lighter than her natural color. “I loved having blonde hair–it’s so much fun.” But there’s one thing McPhee won’t miss: “Blonde was pretty hard on my hair,” she admits. “I guess my hair is thanking me now!” You betcha it is! We were not fans of this color at all, and are so happy to see her back as a brunette. BSW wants to know: Which color do you like on Katharine?

While promoting her newest flick, The Runaways, Dakota Fanning sported sexy Cat Eyes, and for a moment we actually forgot how young she still is. With just a sweep of thick top cat eyeliner, Dakota Fanning revitalized a classic look for spring, and made it her own. Pairing it with glossy peach lips, and only a touch of peach blush, she was fresh, and youthful without looking overdone. If you’ve had the urge to play with a shadow, or gel liner and try something different for spring, this is your cue.

As Bella Swan in the Twilight saga, Kristen Stewart kept her look simple and very girl-next-door. Her role as Joan Jett in The Runaways, however, is a different story, and she’s taking quite a different approach.

Take the hot pink lip color she was wearing at the movie’s premiere in New York City. To get Kristen’s look, celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender suggests blending a champagne and Gunmetal metallic shadow around the eyes, and contouring the face with a pearlescent shimmer before adding the finishing touch. “A rosy stain blended on the cheeks and lips kicks this look into rockstar worthy,” said Bender. The effect? A modern version of ’70s glam, and one that Joan Jett would definitely approve of.

Most of the time Jennifer Aniston’s makeup is simple and chic with a golden glow that needs nothing more than a little lip gloss and eyeliner, but at the London premiere of The Bounty Hunter, she turned up her red carpet look a notch with a soft shimmery shadow.

To get Jen’s new look, celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender suggests rimming your eyes with a black waterproof liner first, and then topping it with a grayish-silver shadow. This will give you color without covering the entire eyelid for a lush, and unfussed effect. Finish with 2 coats of your favorite lengthening, and thickening mascara in black, and off you go.
