The day after the Academy’s most sites, especially beauty, fashion and celebrity are loaded with their takes on who they loved, and didn’t love. So with that being said, forgive us if we have indulged a little more than usual.

Jennifer Lopez who looked exceptionally radiant last night shimmered in pink silk organza, and matching pink cream highlighter. Her makeup which usually has more of a bronzed feel to it, was ‘Hollywood Glamour’ all the way! “I wanted to create an ethereal movie-star look,” said NARS makeup artist Matthew Vanleeuween, who created the look after being inspired by her dress. Mission accomplished Matthew!

Get Vera Farmiga’s Look From The Oscars

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 8th March 2010

Supporting actress nominee for “Up In the Air” Vera Farmiga took a big fashion risk with her huge, ruffled fuschia-toned Marchesa gown. To balance out her look, hairstylist Lona Vigi, who also created Cameron Diaz’s do, kept Vera’s tresses low-key, but still full enough to see the hair from straight on.

Vera Farmiga 2010 Oscar

“It’s a lot of dress,” Vigi said, “and it’s beautiful and vibrant, so we basically wanted to keep the hair off her face, but also keep it strong.” The key to creating the look was making sure Farmiga’s hairstyle complemented her narrow face shape. “We wanted to make sure we saw hair on the bottom when you looked at her straight-on, especially with her face shape. I didn’t just want to have no hair.”

Vigi achieved volume on top and bottom, without losing the pretty proportions by First drying Farmiga’s hair with a Velecta Paramount blow-drier, using Volumizing Catalyst for lifting the roots from LiQWD, and for added volume on top, she used a round brush and concentrated on the roots.

Next Vigi gently back-combed the hair on top and in the back to get a little lift all-around. She then tied the bottom section to the nape of her neck with an elastic, wrapping the ponytail, section by section, into a loose chignon secured by bobby pins. “Vera’s like me, we don’t like hair super constricted, so it looks really serious,” she said.

Next, the hairdresser added a Fred Leighton diamond brooch to her hair on the left-back side for a little extra bling, and finally, she sprayed the entire look with L’oreal Elnett hairspray for a light hold.

Cameron Diaz’s Sexy Waves Inspired By Old Hollywood

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 8th March 2010

Red carpet gowns and up-dos were the signature look on many celebrities who attended last nights Oscars, but long hair when done well, can look fresh and modern on the red carpet too. Just look at Cameron Diaz, who certainly showed that down-dos can be equally as chic.

The blond bombshell went for classic Hollywood waves to complement her beaded gold Oscar de la Renta strapless gown. Her hair stylist Lona Vigi, who created the style, used the “cool air” switch while blow drying to set waves in place.

“I also used the Volumizer Catalyst product from LiQWD, which is the greatest product for fine hair,” said Vigi. “Then we hot-rollered her whole head, so she could wear the waves swept to one side, old Hollywood-style.”

Our Favorite Beauty Looks: Oscars 2010

Posted by Ingrid on 8th March 2010

Nicole Richie took her signature cat-eye makeup one step further by layering a thick black gel liner with shapely silver and deep gray shadow. She added a strip of false lashes to finish her starlet, ’60s-inspired look, and we just loved it! Making them the most dramatic eyes of the evening.Nicole Richie's Cat eyes
Red Carpet Beauty How To: To get Nicole’s Cat Eyeliner, start with the eyeshadow first. Apply a pale silver shimmer to the eyelid, followed by a dark gray shadow in the crease, and extending the color so it ends right below the eyebrow. Try the BFF Smoky Eye Palette, and use the Cat Eyeliner Stencil included in the kit for creating perfect eyeliner just like Nicole’s.
Once you have done eyeliner on both eyes, have the desired thickness, and point, using a black gel eyeliner trace over shape to set the color, and prevent smudging. Try Stay Put Gel Eyeliner in Onyx.
SarahJParker
Our other Favorite Red Carpet look last night at the Oscars was Sarah Jessica Parker’s gorgeous hair, and tons of it! This look totally worked, (although many thought not), and we liked her Chanel Haute Couture gown  that was simple, yet so complex at the same time with a one of a kind neckline. Stacked bangles and large cluster earrings added more bling to her mix, and perfectly applied eyeliner made her stunning green eyes, even greener. The artfully woven pieces showed off her impeccable hair color, which was a blend of honey and rich brunette.
Note To Our Readers: Last night in Hollywood the weather was touch and go. The rain thankfully did not come, but many other sites not based in Los Angeles were commenting on Ms. Parker’s fly-away’s, and if you looked closely there were many other ladies who had the same problem.  As far as the buns go, we think it was a smart move considering the mess that could have been if it had poured as predicted by our fabulous weather people.

Best Beauty Looks At The 2010 Oscars: Sexy Cat Eyes

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 7th March 2010

Since early this week, television crews, and correspondents from all over the world have been claiming their territory on the red carpet to cover this years Academy Awards. Held at the Kodak Center on Hollywood Blvd for close to 10 years, and in just a few short hours it will be filled with celebrities galore. Our favorite part of the entire evening at BSW is of course the glorious ‘red carpet’. So special a name, it deserves its own definition in the dictionary, and may in fact already have one.

Get Emily Blunt's Sexy cat Eyes

Many of the women attending tonight have been getting ready since early this morning, with hair, makeup, nails, styling, and let’s not forget all of the treatments prior to even today. Whatever looks you will see tonight, will be featured on every beauty site, beauty magazine, celebrity gossip show, and of course our favorite magazine for celebrity coverage, People, by weeks end.

The beauty will probably bare some resemblance to looks seen at last falls spring fashion shows, so look for smoky eyes in pinks, purples, light blues, and blues, skin that shimmers, and is flawless skin, and bright  lip colors in pinks and reds.  Emily Blunt who looked just lovely at this years Golden Globes may decide to do her beautiful cat eyes since they were such a hit. Blunt’s lavender hue was the ideal compliment to her light green eyes, auburn hair and fair skin, and her perfectly applied cat eyeliner pulled the entire look together.

To get the look without a makeup artist standing by, our celebrity artist Beth Bender of Beth Bender Beauty suggests trying two or three shades of lavender from the same color family. “Apply the lightest shadow to the inner corners of your eyes, the medium on your lids and the darkest along your lashline.” Beth Bender Beauty’s Spring Trio Palette in OMG! or TDF,($36, bethbenderbeauty.com) “does the work of matching a pink, purple and lavender for you,” says Bender.

But, for the ultimate Cat Eyeliner as seen here on Emily, you must check out the Cat Eyeliner Stencil that comes with the palette. It does the sexiest cat eye ever in under 30 seconds flat. You can use an eyeliner sealant to keep the liner from smudging, or go over the shadow with a gel liner once you have your cat eyes finished.

See you on the Red Carpet!

Celebrity Stylist Rachel Zoe Dishes Oscar Gowns

Posted by The Bender Sisters on 5th March 2010

Rachel Zoe is one busy lady, going from one award show to another, checking out all of the fashion at New York, and Milan for her clients, shooting her own reality show, and in between, getting ready for the last award show of the season, and to some, the most important for anyone attending, or nominated…The Oscars.

Stylist to the Stars Rachel Zoe

Her focus now lies on this Sunday’s Academy Awards, where she’ll help Cameron Diaz and Demi Moore get red-carpet ready. At last night’s Hollywood Domino pre-Oscar event, the reality star stayed mum about which designers the two stars would be wearing, but she did promise it would be nothing short of glamorous. “Both Cameron and Demi’s dresses are really, really beautifully glamorous in two very different ways,” Zoe told us. “They love their dresses, which makes me happy. Of course now that I’ve said that, something crazy will happen!” We will keep our fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly for Rachel.

What pre-show tips does Zoe offer to her superstar clients? “I always say, ‘Have a snack like a Power Bar in your bag, stand up straight and bring a back-up pair of shoes for the car,’ so they can switch after the ceremony,” she said.

Great tips from someone who spends an awful lot of time running around trying to find the perfect dress and accessories!

See you on the Red Carpet.

xx

The Roots Pre-Grammy Jam Session Set Hollywood On Fire!

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 1st February 2010

What a weekend it was for BSW and the Bender Sisters!  The Roots sixth annual Pre-Grammy Jam Session held at the Key Club on Sunset was amazing, with back-to-back classics, covers and mash-ups. The Philadelphia crew was having a blast as friends like John Legend, Mos Def, and ex-keyboardist Scott Storch joined them onstage throughout a night that lasted well past 2 a.m.

The Roots Jam

Slash, Twista, David Banner, Ryan Phillippe, and Kelsey Grammer were among the stars who passed on the stuffier Grammy events going on to check out the star-studded-but-casual affair. Prince, Dave Chappelle, Snoop Dogg and even Tom Cruise have all dropped by in the past, and the 2010 event, sponsored by Green Music Group, lived up to all prior expectations as the crowd danced the night away to the non-stop tunes.

Kamal Gray from The Roots

Instantly recognizable drummer Amir Thompson was the first to wander onto the stage as the rest of the group leisurely assembled around him to loud cheers. After a rousing warm-up number that saw Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter doing his best James Brown impression, the Roots kicked things up. “Here I Come,” which the group has turned into the theme for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” was unexpectedly intense as sousaphonist Damon Bryson stomped alongside guitarist Kirk Douglas.

John Legend told the crowd he’s been working on a record with the Roots scheduled for release this summer and then tore into a brand-new track slated for that release. The love in the room for Mos Def was hard to hide as he came onstage in suspenders, sport coat, cap and Abe Lincoln beard, clutching an old-fashioned, fire-engine-red microphone and blazing rapidly through impressive wordplays with his trademark flow. His energy was palpable, and of course the Roots, as he traded and shared verses with Black Thought.

Bilal, Foreign Exchange, Ledisi, Mack Main, Lil Twist, Shanell and Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda all took turns sitting in with the band as the night went on. Despite the marathon set which began close to midnight, most guests were  feeling the energy, and ready for a good time, and when the night was over, that same energy spilled out onto Sunset Blvd, and what a beautiful sight it was.

Lipstick Mania

Posted by Quinntin on 29th January 2010

Celebrity makeup artist Ouinntin Phelps

In today’s changing world, it has been said that lipstick is the one beauty tool a woman can count on.  I believe this to be true.

That very tool that women count on varies greatly from woman to woman, season to season and year to year.  I must also add that lip-gloss has now become equally important.  Its texture and finish are as vital as the color itself. The search for that perfect lip color is an ongoing quest that can feel like an impossible dream.

What I know for sure is that women often spend as much time contemplating this relatively low cost – high return purchase as they do when buying a pair of Christian Louboutin heels or a Vera Wang wedding dress.

For nearly twenty years nudes have dominated lipstick color.  They have done so well that for many they have become the only colors that exist. Thank you Bobbi Brown for ensuring that nudes continue to endure in tones so similar one can barely see the difference between pale pinks, beige pinks and brown pinks until of course, you try them on. The challenge then begins as means to zero in on perfection.

Celebrity artsist Quinntin Phelps

And what about red?  Lately we just can’t get enough of it! In this age of visibly powerful women, the red lip is a clear statement of the extreme power of femininity. There are a myriad of options for adapting this into a personal statement.  We not only wish to have red, but it must possess the perfect undertones.

Every cosmetic company will produce a red lipstick, though some do it better than others. Thank you Laura Mercier, for putting red back on the map, Nars for Shanghai Express brick red, MAC for classically matte Russian Red (if your lips can bear it) and of course, Chanel, the line most know for its heritage of classic, luxurious reds.

Possibly the most exciting development for lips is color.  Yes, real live color has made its resurgence- in succulent tones of watermelon, tangerine, cherry, blackberry and more. However, it’s difficult to find the correct interpretations of this seemingly “new” creation so we  have returned to the companies who were  first to finesse the colorful lip such as Dior, YSL and Givenchy. While new companies arise, few really understand the lipstick seeker’s frenzy that’s enough to drive the beauty technician from the cosmetic counter back to the an office job.

Lip color now consists of many hues from neutrals to bright, bright to dark, dark to reds, and let’s not forgets those gorgeous pastels. The difference is whatever shade you choose is a representation of your being.

Remember, this is an era during which lips indeed have taken on a life of their own, becoming the focal point of beauty in this new age. My advice when choosing a lip color is: don’t be shy, but allow your whole self to be there as you decide. After all, this lip color represents all of who you are and whether you choose nude or the deepest red, wear it with conviction, knowing that it may appear to some to be all about the beauty of the lip color. We know that it’s really about the true expression of your authentic beauty shining through.

Quinntin Phelps is the former Global Director of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. A celebrated artist whose work has been featured in the hottest magazines for beauty.
