Hot Beauty Trend To Try: Graphic Eyeliner

Posted by BSW Buzz on 5th September 2011

When it comes to drawing outside the lines and taking risks, actress Amber Heard isn’t shy. The star of The Rum Diary, plays muse to top Hollywood makeup pro Jeanine Lobell.

hottest fall beauty trends Cat Eyeliner

Rocker Cat Eyes

WHY IT WORKS: Bored with the traditional cat eye? With the wing open just a smidge, the iconic look gets an edgy, new vibe. “It’s more graphic and interesting, yet nearly just as simple to do,” says Lobell.
HOW-TO Using a stiff pointed brush, Lobell traced Heard’s upper and lower lash lines with a jet-black liquid, extending the lines 1/4 inch past the outer corners of her eyes (leaving a space in between). “If you go out further, you’ll have a Black Swan moment,” she warns. “And make sure the lines are straight—not flared up—almost like an equal sign.” To clean up imperfections, Lobell used a pointed cotton swab dipped in eye-makeup remover.

Thick and Squared Off

Cat Eyeliner with a modern updated look

WHY IT WORKS “This eye makes me feel rebellious. I’d wear it with sexy heels and a badass pair of jeans,” Heard says. As striking as a colorblock design, this thick, squared-off wing looks most modern with a matte finish—and no mascara. “This is for that cool girl who puts eyeliner on and nothing else,” says Lobell.
HOW-TO Before applying liner, Lobell dusted translucent powder over Heard’s lids.  Using a cat eye stencil she filled in the shape with a black dampened shadow on the upper lash lines, making sure to pull her eyelid up toward the temple to hold the skin taut.  The cat eye stencil takes the guessing out of how to create the perfect liner, and for someone who is not as comfortable doing it freehand, this makes it a breeze.  Next, she topped the wing off with a black gel eyeliner. “The muted color tones down the intensity and makes it look fresh,” says Lobell.

Double Sided Cat Eye

WHY IT WORKS Don’t let this double-sided, sloping cat eye intimidate you: according to Lobell, the graphic liner accentuates the shape of your eyes. “This is very rock and roll—I’m talking leather, studs, and fringe! It’s very different,” Heard said. “It’s a sexier version of a cat eye.”
HOW TO For this look, Lobell strongly recommends using marker-style pens. “They have a superfine tip and the right amount of firmness, so you’ll have more control,” she says. Because this effect is so detailed and “almost calligraphy-like,” it’s easier to connect a series of dashes than to attempt drawing one fluid swoosh. You can also use the cat eyeliner stencil to at least get the line perfect along the lids and create the winged effect, and then finish with a marker-style pen to extend the liner as seen here.

Check Out Katherine McPhee’s Exaggerated Cat-Eye Liner. Do You Love It and Want To Know How To Get It?

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 16th August 2011

Cat eyeliner has gotten major traffic on both the runway and the red carpet, but few have pulled it off as effortlessly—and bravely—as Katharine McPhee at the New Balance Experience Store opening in New York City. That is with a little help from her cat eyeliner stencils that created her sexy feline eyes like a pro, and in seconds I might add.

Katherine McPhee's Take on Winged Cat Eyeliner

We love the way she lined only the top lid and left her lower lashline nearly bare, but also a smart move considering how elaborate her eyeliner is.  To get the look, start by lining your top lids, working from the center outward and lifting up the end toward the temple. Using an eyeliner stencil is the easiest way to do it and there is no mess involved. Think eyebrow stencil but for eyeliner.  So you would lift the stencil up and pull away from the eye to create the elongated look seen here.  Then line from the inner eye and fill in toward the middle. You can use a tapered eyeliner brush for this without the stencil.

5 Beauty Lessons You Can Learn From Madonna Who Turned 53 and Still Looks Amazing!

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 16th August 2011

5 best beauty tips from Madonna

Madonna over the years and at 53

It’s been over three decades since Madonna took the music industry (and in turn, the world) by storm with her ohmygod-did-you-see-that?! style. From her “Like a Virgin” days to her most recent “Sticky and Sweet” tour, the international pop superstar is the ultimate fashion and beauty chameleon, who never stops reinventing herself.

And while at 53, (yes, she’s really 53!), the Material Girl still pushes the envelope with her wardrobe, she’s softened her hair and makeup and looks more stunning than ever. Here, her top five beauty cues for looking gorgeous at any age:

Embrace your quirks. While it’s rumored that Madonna has had a slew of plastic surgery and other various procedures to enhance her appearance, she’s never fixed the gap in her teeth. In fact, it was reported that she was irate when a magazine airbrushed it out on the cover.

Find the right hair color. Madonna has experimented with a slew of hair colors, but her current golden hue best suits her skin tone. Plus, it covers up her grays and makes her wrinkles less pronounced than a dark shade would.

Play up your best feature. To enhance her stunning blue eyes, the singer relies on false lashes and precise cat liner. And when she wears nude lipstick, it makes her eyes stand out even more.

Take care of your skin. Before every single makeup application, Madonna’s longtime makeup artist, Gina Brooke, puts an iced Shu Uemura Depsea Moisture Replenishing mask on the star’s face for fifteen minutes to hydrate, de-puff and prep her skin.

Stay in shape. The chiseled star, famous for her macrobiotic diet and intense workout regime, recently announced plans to open a Hard Candy gym in Mexico City and expand the franchise to more than ten locations worldwide.

What Do We Think Of Anne Hathaway’s Classic Black Liner and Barely There Makeup Look?

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 12th August 2011

Has anyone noticed that Ms. Hathaway’s hair is three shades lighter than usual or am I the only one?  I kind of like it though.  Anyway for the premiere of her movie One Day, Anne wore a gold embroidered Alexander McQueen gown, which was gorgeous, and was also the reason for her barely-there makeup and classic eyeliner.
Create classic eyeliner like Anne Hathaway

To create Anne’s eyes we checked in with celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender who gave us the low-down on how to get them.  Start by drawing a thin line along the upper and lower lashline and inside the rim too.   “I just started using Too Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof Eyeliners and am addicted.  The color glides on beautifully, and in seconds is smudge proof, and budge proof.  LOVE!”

Next, using a natural fiber brush with a crème shadow in deep charcoal, apply the color out to the corners, blending a tiny amount under the eyes to soften the shape.  Finish with a sheer shadow applied to the contour of eyes for definition.  A pink or beige shimmer is good, but just a wash of color.
The eyeliner is so striking that anything more will totally over power the look.

Kate Middleton Make’s a Ring of Eyeliner Look Ladylike at this Weekend’s Royal Wedding

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 1st August 2011

Kate Middleton, or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, as she is also called, made a ring of eyeliner around her eyes that looked simply perfect at the royal wedding of the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips and rugby player Mike Tindall over the weekend. Here’s how she did it.

0801-kate-middleton-duchess-kate-wedding-eyeliner-eye-makeup_bd.jpg

First, she didn’t go for a jet-black eyeliner pencil, instead she used a powder shadow in charcoal which she applied with a slightly dampened eyeliner brush to ensure staying power.  She softened the color by sweeping a wash of chocolate brown shadow over the liner. On her lower lids the liner isn’t on the inner rim, instead she applied the color along her bottom lashline.  This not only makes her eyes look bigger, but it keeps the look from getting too smoldering.

Here’s a few products to check out if you’re thinking of copying Kate’s eyeliner:

A very smart move on her part was not to add anything shimmery.  Best suited for a night-time look, and not in the daytime which is when this photo was taken. Yay for Kate!

Do you ever fancy wearing ladylike eyeliner around your entire eye like Kate’s seen here? Or do you prefer yours to be sultry and come-hither?  Please dish.

Kate Moss’s No-Fail Cat Eyeliner Is A Big Hit

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 18th July 2011

Getting graphic cat-eye liner just right can be a bit of a task—but you wouldn’t know it from newlywed Kate Moss’s pitch-perfect version that she rocked at an art opening last week in London.  Kate’s secret to her super sexy eyeliner is the cat eye stencil from the Get in Line Eyeliner Stencil Kit.  If you’re going free hand, a few easy tweaks using this cat eye stencil can help you hone your technique.

Kate Moss perfects the cat eyeliner

First, hold the cat eye stencil over your eyelid at an angle, pointing slightly upward, and applying very gentle pressure with your eyeshadow brush as you sweep the color along the cat eye shape.  Holding the stencil away from the eyelid will create a thicker line, and closer to the eyelid a thinner line. When you’re done,  you can go over the shadow with a gel eyeliner in the same color to set your eyes and keep them from smudging.

Thinking of creating sexy cat eyeliner like Kate’s?  Here’s a few products that will help you get the look with ease.

Click here for step by step instructions on using the Cat Eye Stencil.

An Eyeliner You Won’t Be Able To Live Without

Posted by Beth on 13th July 2011

Have you been looking for the perfect eyeliner to accent your eyes, go on smoothly, not break your bank account, and best of all, stay put for hours?  Well look no further. NYX Cosmetics has just introduced their retractable eyeliner, which happens to be waterproof. Yay!!!  I don’t usually go for the retractable liners but this one is really exceptional, and the color is so creamy, and goes on like a dream.

New! NYX Retractable Eyeliners

The creamy texture of this Mechanical Pencil delivers the most intense pigmentation while it moisturizes your eyelids. The formula is renowned for its lasting power and it does not disappoint!  As a makeup artist, and consumer, I highly recommend these eyeliners. They have found a permanent place in my makeup case, as well as my makeup kit.

Check Out Olivia Wilde’s Sexy Eyeliner Look

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 13th June 2011

When it comes to sexy eye makeup, it doesn’t get easier than this look seen here on Olivia Wilde. Check it out for yourself:

0613-olivia-wilde-gray-eye-makeup-look_bd.jpg
“Olivia has the perfect eyes for anything feline,” says celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender. They turn up ever so slightly so just a light dusting of a gray eyeshadow on her upper lids is all she needs.
0613-gray-eye-makeup-close_bd.jpg
It’s all about the gray when creating this smoldering, sexy look. To do on yourself Beth suggests using a medium size eyeshadow, or eyeliner brush, and very carefully sweep the color along the eyelids only. A shimmer or matte shadow will both work. Adding anymore color might end up looking too heavy so be careful while applying.

Finish by applying a gel eyeliner in Onyx or Gunmetal along the lashline, following the natural curve of your own eyelid. And last curl your lashes, and follow with two generous coats of black mascara.

Here are some eyeliner kits from Beth Bender Beauty that’ll get you there:

Cheers!!

Angelina Jolie’s Tip To Making Her Cat-Eye Liner Look Softer

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 26th May 2011

When you’re Angelina Jolie, you can do the cat eye look anytime you like, and look perfect in any setting. Others like myself can go a little overboard, and end up with a cat eye that is way too thick, and way too dark. But here’s a tip for softening the look, as seen on Angelina here on the RC yesterday.

0525-angelina_jolie_makeup_trick_brunettes_bd.jpg

Looking lovely at the “Tree of Life” premiere in Los Angeles, and sticking with her classic look of thick black eyeliner, and a neutral pink lip. The only difference, her eye makeup was a little softer than usual. Take a look at this close up:

0525-angelina_jolie_makeup_brunettes_zoom-bd.jpg

A wash of coppery-bronze shadow was applied over the liner to diffuse the color and add a warmth which I think looks gorgeous. Also nice about this look, the colors playing off of Angelina’s chocolate brown hair. The same coppery-bronze shadow was also applied into the bed of her bottom lashes.

Of course I think the easiest way to get this look is to use a Cat Eye stencil, and Angelina Jolie is no stranger to this little beauty tool, especially when her makeup artist has the night off. This is another fabulous trick for getting the cat-eye look just right.
