Celebrity Beauty: Rose Byrne’s Subtle Smoky Eyes

Posted by Ingrid on 31st August 2010

Rose Byrne of Damages was sporting a soft curly updo at this years 2010 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.  A good call to compliment her neatly sculpted eye shadow and eyebrows which as Beth says were “red carpet appropriate”. On Sunday Beth was behind the scenes making everyone beautiful and then covering the carpet, but this was one of her favorite looks of the evening and she wanted to dish.

RoseByrnePic

“Rose was beautiful on the carpet and her makeup created by Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee was fabulous.” I loved her eyebrows and thought they definitely completed the eyes for a more polished look.”  To get the look Kate started with a layer of eye shadow base, and then added a layer of a gentle mauve pewter shade.

Next she added black liner under the lashline for depth, and then went back over the liner with a liquid shadow for added eye appeal. The end result was makeup that managed to get her noticed, and was still subtle at the same time.

Beth’s Beauty Tip: Ladies don’t poo-poo the idea of using an eyebrow stencil or eyeliner stencil for creating this look. I am a huge fan of both and it saves you so much time.

Check out Anastasia’s Eyebrow Stencils. They are the best and so easy to use. You can buy a set of four stencils, or choose from a selection of kits for creating gorgeous eyebrows.

For perfect eyeliner, cat eyeliner, and smoky eyes, check out the Get in Line Eyeliner Kit. Each kit comes complete with one set of eyeliner stencils, shadows, brush, and step-by-step instructions.

Emmy Red Carpet Beauty: Christina Hendricks

Posted by Cindy Bokma on 30th August 2010

I’m sure it doesn’t take much to get Christina Hendricks ready for anything. She probably wakes up looking fantastic. For her Emmy night look, makeup artist Vanessa Scali created this soft, etheral look to match Christina’s Zac Posen gown. Here is all you need to know:

ChristinaH.Pic

Face: Vanessa prepped the skin with Lancôme’s La Base Pro. To perfect Christina’s already luminous skin, Vanessa used Lancôme’s new Teint Miracle Lit-From-Within Makeup. “It has an amazing transparent quality that leaves the skin looking flawless and luminous without being shiny,” said Vanessa. “I applied it with a brush and then blended with my fingers.” Blending with her fingers heated up the foundation a bit, allowing for a seamless finish. Vanessa followed with Effacernes Concealer under the eyes, her “all time favorite concealer.”

Cheeks: For a fresh pop of color I used Lancôme’s Blush Subtil Shimmer in Pink Pool on the apples of her cheeks. Dabs of Giorgio Armani Beauty’s Fluid Sheer #2 highlighted Christina’s cheekbones.

Eyes: The eye shadow was mix of YSL’s Ombre Solo Eyeshadow in Cashmere Brown and Midnight Black. “I applied these all over her lid, under the bottom lashes and blended it out past her natural lash line to softly elongate the eye,” reported Vanessa.

Eye Liner: To define and elongate the lash line, Vanessa lined the eyes with Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khôl in Black. “I used a touch of liner under her bottom lashes but smudged it for a softer look,” said Vanessa.  For added depth, Vanessa used Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir at the very base of Christina’s lashes.

Mascara: Several generous coats of Lancôme Définicils Waterproof Mascara in Black were used on the top and bottom lashes.

Lips: Christina’s lips were a mix of Lancôme lip colors for an effect that Vanessa described as “red with a little dash of pink.” A sheer coat of Color Design Matte Lipstick in Corset was topped by La Laque Fever Lipshine in Cyber Coral.

L’Oreal’s New Studio Secrets Eyeshadow Quad

Posted by Cindy Bokma on 27th August 2010

If you are as bad as applying eye shadow as I am, you must buy yourself the new L’Oreal Studio Secrets Eyeshadow Quad. This four color pan makes it a cinch to properly apply shadows and get that sought after smoky eye.

L'Oreal's Studio Secrets Eyeshadow Quads

L'Oreal's Studio Secrets Eyeshadow Quad

The shades are labeled 1-4 with application directions on the back of the compact. You start by lining your eye with number one, the darkest of the colors. Add the mid-tone number two then highlight with number three.  I add the last color to my lid, all over, blending everything with an eye shadow brush. Done and done. Then I add a ton of mascara and maybe a few false eye lashes. I only do this at night, during the day I tend to look like a tranny queen out on a daytime stroll.

With this nifty little eye quad and a little practice, you will be able to do a dramatic smoky eye. I’ve watched endless You Tube videos on doing a night time eye and that, accompanied by my eyeshadow foursome, cuts the application time in half.

Also noteworthy from L’Oreal  is the Infallible Lip Color Stars Collection features colored base and a sheer gloss over top. The gloss seals in the color and makes life easier but not having to obsessively reapply lip color after every kiss, drink, or meal.

The Stars collection features colors named after famous women. I tried the follwing shades:  Beyonce Red (wow, talk about a bright retro shade for a high impact!), Diane’s Tuberose, a mid tone red pink (We’re taking about Ms. Keaton here), Kate’s Plum, as the name suggests, a darker shade named after a Mexican film actress, Kate del Castillo, not Kate Hudson as I originally- and mistakenly- thought. Note to L’Oreal I’d love a Dollface shade, it would be a pink-peach with a blue tint so teeth look brighter.

You can find more shades from the Stars Collection and the entire Infallible line. There are plenty of colors to suit your every mood and outfit. Find them  by going to your friendly neighborhood drugstore, Target, or here on Ulta. And check out this video of Miss Beyonce herself getting ready using her own Beyonce Red!

Get Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Red Carpet Look From CoverGirl

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 18th August 2010

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal attended the New York premiere of “Nanny McPhee Returns”. Makeup artist Molly R. Stern of CoverGirl created her red carpet look and shares her step-by-step tips on how get it, and her inspiration behind the look.

image001

Loews Lincoln Square 13 on August 17, 2010 in New York Cit

Inspired by the beauties of the 1920’s and 30’s, we combined the smoky eye with an added electric element and a deeply stained lip.

I started by prepping the skin with lavender mist by Jurlique and moisturized with SK11 Facial Lift Emulsion.  Next, I primed her skin with COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum-Primer and sparingly used Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation. I blushed the cheek with Chantecaille Aqua Blush in “Daring” with a powder blush overtop.

I smoked the eye out with Shu Uemura IR Purple 795 Pressed Eyeshadow. Then, I lined the top lash line with Sheseido Automatic Fine Eyeliner in brown and smudged out the bottom lash line with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast Eye liner in “Violet Voltage”. Then, two coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Brown with a little black mascara on the ends. Her deep lipstain is the new shade of COVERGIRL Outlast Lipstain in Saucy Plum. To set the look, I used La Mer Treatment Powder Foundation just in the t-zone.

And there you have it! Another Fabulous red carpet look for you to enjoy.

Get The Look: Emmy Rossum’s Purple Smoky Eyes

Posted by Ingrid on 16th August 2010

Purple eye shadow is becoming a favorite of celebrity makeup artists, and their celebrity clients. Julia Roberts showed up to her Eat Pray Love Red Carpet Premiere in NYC with Lavender lids, and Emmy Rossum showed off her aubergine eyes at the opening night of Trust in New York City.

Emmy Rossum

A bold statement to some, but most makeup artists actually think of it as a dressed-up neutral. In Emmy’s case her makeup artist chose sheer hues with grayish undertones to keep the eyes from looking tired, and applied the color below the crease of her eyelids. A gel eyeliner in brown was applied along the lashline, and extended out at the ends to add definition to the delicate tone.

A simple but beautiful look, on or off the red carpet.

Check out the Eat Pray Love Collection from beth bender beauty in “Loved“. A limited edition and only available until the end of August.

Our Favorite Smoky Eye Look Of The Day

Posted by Lars on 11th August 2010

Julia Roberts was not playing at last night’s premiere of Eat, Pray, Love in NYC. Wearing a Stella McCartney jacket, Diane Von Furstenberg shorts, and Roger Vivier satin sandals, she owned the red carpet. Her makeup was soft but appropriate for the theme of the movie, and only when you got a little closer could you see that there was a little more going on with her eyes.

JuliaEatLove

Instead of wearing her usual dark brown smudged liner, she opted for an eyeliner and eye shadow in purple hues. The look was really beautiful and easy to do.

The Close-up shot:

After the premiere I decided to get out a few of my purple shadows and just have some fun. I applied with my fingers, blended with an eyeshadow brush, and finished with a gel eyeliner in eggplant that I only applied to the top eyelid just like Julia. It looked really amazing and took all of 5 minutes to do.

To create the look on yourself here are a few colors from beth bender beauty for you to consider:

What do you think of Julia’s look? Are you into the purple shades or do you prefer the neutral colors? Comments are what we love, so keep em’ comin’…

Create Soft Smoky Eyes Like A Pro

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 9th August 2010

Celebrity Keri Hilson added a touch of red carpet glamour to her already edgy hair style, by pairing it with soft smoky eyes that were a huge hit. Seen here at the Hollywood premiere of Takers, although somewhat dramatic, they still had a light effect because of how the colors were applied to the eyes.

SoftSmokyEyes

Celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender who gets more requests for smoky eyes than any makeup artist I know, says “rather than applying a charcoal shadow on your entire eyelid, only add it below the crease.” “Finish by adding a shimmery, neutral shadow directly over the darker color, and blending well for a softer version of a smoky eye.”

Beth’s Beauty Tip: Hilson went for a sheer pewter tone that was blended all the way up to her brow bone. The most important thing you can do when creating a look like this on yourself is to also blend the colors well.

Check out the Just Kidding Smoky Eye Kit or The BFF Smoky Eye Kit to get this look.

Get Kim Kardashian’s Newest Smoky Eyes

Posted by Ingrid on 3rd August 2010

Kim Kardashian continues to take the lead in sexy, saucy smoky eyes, and even those who are beauty newbies are hot on the smoky eye craze, and wanting to know just how she does it.  Her latest look in purple and gray’s was spotted at the 13th Annual Super Saturday event.

0802-purple-smoky-eye_bd.jpg
From a distance it’s hard to really see the detail, and colors, but when you take a closer look…
KimKshot 0802-purple-tone-smoky-eye-makeup_bd.jpg
you see the purple hue that she used to soften the look, and give her eyes that special glow that everyone seems to love.

KimEyes

The easiest way to create this look says celebrity makeup artist Beth Bender is to start with your contour color in the crease ( a soft black or gunmetal) first, and then follow with your purple shadow, which in this case is more of a lavender with gray undertones.

“Blending these two colors together will give you the same look seen here on Kim.” Sweep the same lavender color underneath the bottom lid, and add a touch of black eyeliner to the rim if you desire.  “Most importantly be patient if your first try turns out to be a beauty bust, remember Kim has had years of practice and even she too was once a newbie, says Bender”

The quickest and easiest way to create a smoky eye look is to have a kit that includes almost everything you need. For this look a smoky eye stencil will come in handy especially for helping with placement, size, and perfect liner underneath the eye. Beth recommends The KMA Smoky Eyeshadow Kit which includes both a lavender and soft black eyeshadow and comes with one set of stencils and brush.

Let us know what you think of Kim’s eyes. Are you a fan of the smoky eye or do you go for a softer summer look? We would love to know..
