Curly Girls Rock At Devachan Salon NYC Part 1

Posted by Te-see on July 5th, 2011

Okay girls, it’s time to let your curls bounce all over town!  Thanks to Lorraine Massey and Denis DaSilva, owners and founders of Devachan Salon and DevaCare Hair Products, you can do just that!  Once you enter the salon you are greeted by curls and big smiles…No straight hair allowed…It’s almost like you’ve stepped into the “Twilight Zone  for curly hair”…Well, not exactly, but you do feel like you finally fit in…Your very own click for “curly hair.”

Te-see, Lorraine Massey, and Ella...Curl Power!

This was our second visit to the salon at the Broadway location in NYC.  Always a wake up call about proper hair care for my curls…My favorite Devachan stylist Rosie DaSilva and her fabulous assistant Gin, greeted us with big hugs then quickly began Ella’s consult about the condition of her hair and what she wanted.  “I like the children to express themselves during our hair session.  It’s important that they use their inside feelings to express how they want their hair to look,” Rosie explained. Before Rosie touches your curls, she sits down and asks you what you are feeling about your hair that day and what you want it to look like at the end of your session.  I just love that about her!

Ella made it very clear that she wanted long bangs to fall in her face…LOL!

Rosie cuts your curly hair dry by taking each strand and following it’s natural curl from the scalp to the end.  Then she cuts it accordingly to it’s natural shaped curl.  (This is why the salon stresses the importance of arriving to your scheduled appointment with your natural curls) Curls vary depending on each individual person.

Once Rosie is done with the cut, Ella heads over to the comfy lounge seats for a “curly hair” wash and condition with Rosie’s assistant Gin.  Once the conditioner is applied, it’s partially rinsed which is the magic behind hydrating your curls.  (Depending on the condition of your hair that day, you might need more or less conditioner)

You can use a micro-fiber towel, cotton t-shirt, or paper towel to gently scrunch out the water.  Once this is done then a variety of DevaCurl/Care products can be applied depending on your hair needs that day.  This is followed by clipping the crown of your head to get the proper height and style for your curls.

Your entire hair session can take about 90 to 120 minutes since it includes:  your personal hair consult, cut, wash & condition, wringing out the water, pinning, drying, and styling…While you are engrossed in your session you will learn so much about caring for your individual curly hair type.  A real eye opener…
