Emmy Night Fashion: Cindy Bokma Of Hello Dollface

Posted by Cindy Bokma on 30th August 2010

Here is the big fashion recap from Emmy night! I asked my pal Beth Bender of BeautyStyleWatch to chime in and add her thoughts. Keep reading!

Eva Longoria Parker gives us  no big surprises here, she’s always dressed in flattering gowns that accentuate her tiny waist. Ive seen this look before on her but thats okay because its a good look. I’ll give her two thumbs up for a lovely dress and accessories.

I love Claire Danes hair and dress. Please tell me she’s wearing some kind of sparkling diamond earring…to not wear any jewelry at all would be criminal. A cocktail ring or tasteful diamonds would have been perfection. You can’t just wear a gown, does she not watch The Rachel Zoe Project? With that being said, Claire’s dress was my fave of the whole night. I’d wear it (with an accessory).

Beth says: Claire Danes looked just beautiful! Her dress was fabulous and the color looked gorgeous against her skin tone. I actually liked the fact that she had no accessories on and think it was a smart move since her gown was so stunning and has lots of bling. Her skin looked flawless, and I loved the tight chocolate brown eyeliner around her eyes which made the color pop even more.

Tina Fey and Mariska Hargitay look lovely. Im in love with the pale blush shade of Mariska’s dress and Tina often wears black but it looks good on her. Glad to see Tina’s hair pulled back and showing off cool earrings. Love both of these girls. (as a writer I’m kind of in awe of Tina)

Beth says: Mariska Hargitay looked fabulous! I loved her hair and makeup, and those eyebrows were outstanding! Her earrings were perfect for the gown she was wearing and her skin looked dewy, and I loved her soft peach cheeks and nude lip.

Tina Fey, not so good. I just love Tina but her dress did not work for me at all. Uggggh! I hated the pattern and thought it was not flattering for her shape.  A few hair extensions and some sexy waves would have been much nicer. Maybe even a few false lashes to open up her eyes. I mean come on people, this is one of the few times you get to play dress up. So have some fun!

Kim Kardashian, or as Joel McHale on The Soup calls her, Kardassian.  What can we say about Kim? She looks like she was drawn in the Disney animation studio and has come to life as a real live Princess Jasmine! I like the dress and the cuff, her is done appropriately for the gown. I’m not bowled over but she does look good.

Beth says: Kim Kardashian…hmmmm....not really sure why she got an invite, and did you notice her mom Chris trying to get a few props on the carpet. I didn’t care for her dress at all. I thought it looked like she was going to a toga party instead of a Hollywood Awards event.

I did like her makeup which was actually very soft compared to the very heavy makeup she is usually seen wearing.

Think of how great Kyra Sedgewick’s dress would look with a slim bejeweled belt, hmmm?  It just needs a POP of something at the waist, do you agree?  I get the hair, all loose and curly but maybe it would have been nice in one of those messy buns. Slim belt, messy bun. I love the color of the dress though.

Let me take a moment to say YAY! JANE LYNCH WON! She makes me laugh out loud on Glee and I can only imagine the fun the writers have coming up with her one line zingers. Im really into the dark purple shade which looks good on almost everyone. Lea Michele’s dress wasn’t my fave, with all those fussy ruffles! I do however, like her necklace and makeup.

Beth says: I loved Lea Michele’s makeup and hair but was on the fence about her gown. It was a little too grown up for my taste, and seemed to swallow her up. I think a different color and not so much fabric would have definitely made a huge difference.

The first thing I noticed was her cat eyes of course and I loved them. Her makeup was beautiful and red carpet appropriate. Her skin looked luminous and her hair looked gorgeous with soft cascading waves that framed her face.

Heidi Klum would like you to know that a mother of four in her late 30’s can still rock a micro mini dress, just don’t try this at home. A little self-indulgent, as Simon Cowell would say, to wear a short dress to the Emmys, I think. Its not the MTV Awards! If that dress came to her knees, I’d be fine with it.

Nina Dobrov is a goddess here! I love the hair, makeup, earrings, one shoulder, the gathering at the waist, the length, the color, everything.

Angela Kinsey from one of my favorite shows The Office. I like her hair and makeup, love the black simple dress. Note the sparkly earrings and single bracelet. Not too much, just enough.

Everyone’s favorite 88 year old, Betty White. She looks like a delicious scoop of Baskin Robbins sherbet in this pastel two piece.

Jayma Mays in that popular navy shade. I like it. I think she is just adorable! The dress fits like a glove, her hair is amazing and the gold accessories highlight the gold in her hair. Well done Jayma!

Head to toe gorgeous! Sofia Vergara (am I the only one who remembers her and Tom Cruise dating for a quick minute several years ago?) looks perfect. Hair, awesome! Makeup, stunning! Accessories, perfect!

Emmy Red Carpet Beauty: Christina Hendricks

Posted by Cindy Bokma on 30th August 2010

I’m sure it doesn’t take much to get Christina Hendricks ready for anything. She probably wakes up looking fantastic. For her Emmy night look, makeup artist Vanessa Scali created this soft, etheral look to match Christina’s Zac Posen gown. Here is all you need to know:

ChristinaH.Pic

Face: Vanessa prepped the skin with Lancôme’s La Base Pro. To perfect Christina’s already luminous skin, Vanessa used Lancôme’s new Teint Miracle Lit-From-Within Makeup. “It has an amazing transparent quality that leaves the skin looking flawless and luminous without being shiny,” said Vanessa. “I applied it with a brush and then blended with my fingers.” Blending with her fingers heated up the foundation a bit, allowing for a seamless finish. Vanessa followed with Effacernes Concealer under the eyes, her “all time favorite concealer.”

Cheeks: For a fresh pop of color I used Lancôme’s Blush Subtil Shimmer in Pink Pool on the apples of her cheeks. Dabs of Giorgio Armani Beauty’s Fluid Sheer #2 highlighted Christina’s cheekbones.

Eyes: The eye shadow was mix of YSL’s Ombre Solo Eyeshadow in Cashmere Brown and Midnight Black. “I applied these all over her lid, under the bottom lashes and blended it out past her natural lash line to softly elongate the eye,” reported Vanessa.

Eye Liner: To define and elongate the lash line, Vanessa lined the eyes with Lancôme’s Le Crayon Khôl in Black. “I used a touch of liner under her bottom lashes but smudged it for a softer look,” said Vanessa.  For added depth, Vanessa used Artliner Precision Point Eyeliner in Noir at the very base of Christina’s lashes.

Mascara: Several generous coats of Lancôme Définicils Waterproof Mascara in Black were used on the top and bottom lashes.

Lips: Christina’s lips were a mix of Lancôme lip colors for an effect that Vanessa described as “red with a little dash of pink.” A sheer coat of Color Design Matte Lipstick in Corset was topped by La Laque Fever Lipshine in Cyber Coral.

HOW TO GET LEA MICHELE’S HAIR LOOK, nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her breakout role in “Glee.”

Celebrity editorial stylist Mark Townsend created a modern and fresh hair look for Lea Michele. “Lea wanted her hair to look touchable and super modern, and full hair with lots of volume and a bit of roughness was perfect against her flawless gown” said stylist Mark Townsend.

Here’s how to get Lea Michele’s look:

  • “Lea’s look started with clean hair.  She used Dove Daily Treatment Conditioner to give softness and smoothness in the time it takes to use a conditioner.

·         “The end-of-Summer timing of the Emmys is a perfect opportunity to play with color. Lea is still shooting episodes of “Glee” and we couldn’t do anything permanent, so I added in a few custom pieces of hair to add dimension and giver her removable highlights for the evening. The result was a golden/coppery effect throughout the ends of her hair.

·         “I wanted Lea’s hair to move in all different directions, so I added in Dove Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse throughout damp her and blow dried with a round brush to add lift.

  • “Next  spray 3 inch sections of hair with Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist to protect hair against heat styling damage before using an iron
  • “Then use a 2 inch curling iron to give a subtle bend or ‘S’ curl, rather than a perfect curl. Curl from the ends all the way up, and set each section with a barrel clip for 5 to 7 minutes or until cool.
  • “Scrunch hair with Dove Daily Moisture Therapy Replenishing Mist to add moisture and blow dry briefly without a diffuser to look a bit undone.

·         “Warm a pea-sized amount of Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream between the palms of hands.  Rake fingers through hair to distribute product evenly for shiny, modern texture.

·         “To evoke Brigitte Bardot inspiration, tease hair at the crown for extra volume and lift.

·         “To finish Lea’s look I sprayed Dove Unscented Extra Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement (Aerosol) liberally on a small, natural bristle eyebrow brush (the kind that looks like a wooden toothbrush) and ran it through her bangs to hold a middle part. The parted bangs gave a modern update to the 60’s vibe of her hair.

·         “I gave Lea a 2 oz. Dove Extra Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement and the natural eyebrow brush to take with her in case she needed a touchup.”

HOW TO GET JANUARY JONES’S HAIR LOOK, nominee for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her iconic role in “Mad Men.”

Celebrity editorial stylist Mark Townsend created an edgy, fashion-forward look for January Jones. “A textured, asymmetrical bob was the perfect way to incorporate January’s love of editorial fashion and runway style into a feminine, yet tough look,” said stylist Mark Townsend.

Here’s how to get January Jones’s look:

·         “The night before, use Dove Intensive Repair Damage Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner to strengthen hair and prevent damage.

·         “Second day texture was key to achieve this runway-meets-Hollywood look, so I pre-styled her hair the night before. Distribute Dove Curl & Sculpt Defining Mousse throughout and blow dry hair with round brush to add lift

·         “Set top sections of hair with large, 3 inch Velcro rollers for 15-20 minutes. While rollers set, add extensions in the front only to make hair longer in the front and shorter in the back.

·         “Spritz throughout with Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist to protect against styling damage.

·         “Wrap 1 ½ to 2 inch sections of hair around a 1 inch curling iron to create a big, loose wave instead of a tight curl.

·         “The next day, reapply mousse to add lift to hair, and blow dry gently with a round brush to freshen up ends but not set perfectly.

·         “Rake a small amount of Dove Frizz Control Therapy Taming Cream through hair to add smoothness.

·         “Finish the look by spraying Dove Flexible Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement (Aerosol) to set the style but still allow movement.”

Tips from Celebrity Editorial Stylist Mark Townsend for Dove Hair Care:

“I was there for Lea’s dress fitting. Everyone in the room knew the Oscar de la Renta gown was “the one” as soon as she put it on, so my brain started working immediately. I wanted to find a way to blend Hollywood and fashion together. Her hair has a modern feel but is inspired by Brigitte Bardot.”

“I texted Lea when she was in the car on her way to the carpet and told her to not brush her hair with a regular hairbrush!  I wanted it to have some texture and separation, so I gave her a mini-bottle of Dove Hairspray and natural bristle eyebrow brush in case.”

“This has been my favorite Emmys of my entire career. Everything was so relaxed and went so smoothly – it’s been the most fun and the most me. “

“January has to maintain very specific hair style for her show, so she doesn’t have the freedom to cut her hair. A modern, asymmetrical bob was the perfect way to have fun with her look.”
