I have been cursed, or so I thought, with curly hair. I absolutely HATED my curls most of my life and tried everything available out there to straighten them. Unfortunately, nothing ever really worked and those damn curls always sprang back into action. My 7 year old daughter is cursed with the same hair and she is always asking her aunt Betty to straighten it!

Ella with Rosie DaSilva senior stylist at Devachan Salon Soho, NY before her hair cut.
But now after meeting Rosie DaSilva, senior stylist at Devachan Salon in New York City, she feels quite different about her natural curly hair. Ella now embraces every wave and loves the way they frame her pretty little freckled face! While visiting New York in June, Lisa Johnson set up a 2 hour appointment at the Soho salon managed by the beautiful and gracious Vitoria. We felt at home amongst all the curly heads. There were red curls, brown curls, black curls, blond curls and even white curls! One more gorgeous then the next!
Rosie, born and raised in Brazil, has been a hair stylist for over 16 years. I can’t begin to tell you the love, passion, and talent that oozes from Rosie…you just have to go to the Devachan Salon in Soho, New York, to experience her touch! Ella and I just LOVED her!!! Any way, I am digressing…The entire curly hair venture took about 2 hours since Rosie and her fabulous assistant Gin were explicit in showing Ella how to care for her curls. Below are photos of Ella’s total Devachan Salon experience, including caring for her own hair…what a concept!

Step 1. Cut curly hair dry!!!
One thing I learned that day is to never cut curly hair wet! The reason being as Rosie explained, is that curls bounce up once they are dry and you always end up cutting too much. “I get a better idea of how each clients hair curls when I cut it dry. Everyone has different types of curls, so each head of curls needs to be treated according to it’s own needs,” said Rosie.

Step 2. Wash curly hair using Devacurl shampoos according to curl type
Gin washed Ella’s hair using Devacurl’s No-poo Shampoo, it doesn’t lather and she only applied it to the scalp. With curly hair, Ella only has to wash her hair once a week using the No-Poo. After cleansing the scalp, Gin followed with Devacurl One Condition. She applied it to Ella’s ends. Gin explained that you never put it on the top of the head since it weighs down the curls.

Step 3. Condition hair and leave some of One Condition in hair.
It is very important that curly hair is constantly conditioned. You start at the ends and work your way up to about 1/2 inch from your scalp. This helps to close the hair cuticle and protect your curls. Gin rinsed out Ella’s hair but left a small amount of One Condition in her hair for added moisture and protection! Then Rosie applied AnGel while Ella’s hair was thrown forward and showed Ella how to dry her slightly wet hair using a micro fiber towel. (You can also use paper towels to absorb water).

Step 4. Lift curls from scalp and place hair pins around entire crown of head
Now that Ella’s hair was prepped for styling, she flipped it back up and Rosie started to lift each curl from the top of Ella’s head to place individual hair pins. “It’s important that each hair pin touches the scalp. This will ensure more height and volume at the top of your head.”

Ella ready for her hair to dry naturally!
Here are a few important factors you need to know about curly hair:
1. Never brush or comb your curls!!! According to Rosie, you need to use your fingers.
2. Always cut your curls dry! Never wet your hair or go to the salon with your hair straight…
3. Leave some of the One Condition by Devacurl in your hair.
4. Make sure you reapply Devacurl’s One Condition in your hair every day, especially when you are swimming or at the beach.
5. Dry naturally or use a hair diffuser.
* Rosie’s motto is to make sure that her clients leave Devachan knowing how to deal with their curls which makes life simpler & easier!
