The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday May 25, from 6 pm – 9 pm, Sephora located at the Century City Westfield Mall in Los Angeles, has been gracious enough to host a charity event that will benefit the Cardinal Manning Center, a homeless shelter on skid row.  Ten percent of all shopping done between those hours goes to help this center.  What a great way to get all the beauty products and supplies you need as well as give back to your community!

At an Art of Elysium event in Cannes, Rachel Bilson showed off her signature sexy kohl-rimmed eyes. They always look perfect, and there is never a smudge in sight. If you’re thinking of going for this sultry look in the coming months, remember these tips for keeping it smudge-free.

First, if your lids are shiny, apply an eyeshadow primer along your top and bottom lashline before applying. A translucent powder is great for setting once you are  finished. You can also follow the steps below to create Rachel’s kohl liner which I have done a number of times and my eyes always look great.

To get the look, start by lining the rim of eyes and dotting in between lashes using a waterproof eyeliner pencil like benefit’s BADGal  Waterproof liner in black. This is probably the best waterproof liner for this type of look. You can smudge or leave alone, it’s up to you. Next, using an eyeliner stencil, place the stencil above your eye and with a small shadow brush apply color along line. Remove the stencil and repeat the same underneath the eye using the bottom eyeliner stencil.

To create a thicker line at the outer eye, go over the liner starting at the middle of eye and out towards the end. Set with an eyeliner sealant, or gel liner especially if it’s a hot day, or your eyelids tend to get shiny fast. To complete “Rachel Bilson’s Kohl-lined Eyes”, apply at least one generous coat of black mascara, starting at the base of lashes and working your way up to the ends . Maybelline’s Pulse Perfection Mascara works really well, and gets every lash.

Only a few years ago Bethenny Frankel, a personal chef, was bar hopping as a major player.  Then she met the man of her dreams…Jason Hoppy, also a player, and everything changed.  Fast forward to May 8, 2010…

Hoppy was sound asleep when Bethenny woke him up to say “the baby was coming.“  Mind you, they weren’t expecting her arrival for another 5 weeks…I guess little Bryn had had enough in there and wanted to be in the limelight like her mother…Needless to say, these soon to be parents had nothing ready for their hospital stay.  They arrived at a hospital in NYC, plastic bags in hand filled with Bethenny’s things and 26 hours later after a C-section, Bryn Casey Hoppy, joined New York City’s society!  She weighed 4 lbs. 12 oz., and after 4 days in the ICU followed her mom and dad home.

According to Bethenny, she’s not concerned about her weight.  She told our NYC BSW reporter “that it would come right off.”

Good luck to Bethenny and Jason…wonder if being a mother will make her more tame on the show…we shall see!

It’s Friday, and most of us are gearing up for the weekend.  I spend my entire week going to the gym so by Friday I’m ready for a vacation…LOL!  So, “everything simple,” is my motto.  When it comes to meals I like to cook tasty yet healthy dishes that won’t make me feel full or guilty for that matter…

One of my all time favorite recipes that I made up one day, which I do quite often, is a roasted pearl tomato and garlic pasta dish.  I have passed it along to several friends over the years and they too love it as much as I do!  The roasted tomatoes and garlic have such a sweet delicious flavor, your family will be drooling while they wait for you to serve it!  (You might not want to mention that it’s healthy and low cal…)

So, let’s get started. You will need 1 pound of pasta (I prefer spaghetti), 1-2 containers of fresh red pearl tomatoes, fresh garlic, a small yellow onion, olive oil, basil, salt & pepper, and sugar.

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Thinly slice 8 garlic cloves, finely chop your onion, and rinse off your tomatoes.  Place tomatoes, garlic, and onion into a large clay or pyrex baking pan.  Drizzle about 2 tablespoons of olive oil over ingredients.  Then sprinkle salt, pepper and 3 teaspoons of sugar.  Place on middle rack of oven and bake for 40 minutes.

While tomatoes are roasting, start to boil your water.  Add pasta to boiling water and cook so that pasta is al dente. Drain water and place in a large pasta bowl.  Remove roasted tomatoes and garlic, carefully pour over pasta.  Gently mix into pasta adding a little more olive oil if you’d like.  Add fresh chopped basil leaves on top and serve.  Add a nice garden salad or garlic bread.  Can be served hot or cold.  Makes a great side dish as well:)

This year the hottest hair style was a “french twist,” that the likes of Salma Hayek, Helen Mirren, Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchette and even Eva Longoria-Parker, were sporting.  Whether it was tight, on top of the head, in the middle of the head or hanging loose, it was a hot, hot, hot, look.

At the 63 Annual Cannes Film Festival, all the celebs showed up dressed to the nines wearing the latest designs by Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, just to name a few.  No star was out shined and the girls all seemed to get the “french twist memo” regarding the look for hair this year!

To create a French Twist at home follow these steps:

Comb or brush your hair well. We’re not talking your usual thirty-second job, but the kind of comb-through where you’re getting the snarls out, smoothing it down, and channeling Catherine Deneuve.

Create a loose ponytail with the hair framing your face in a way that you find flattering.  Create a ponytail with some built-in pouf at the top of your head if you like that look better. The way in which you frame your face now will be how it is framed when you’re finished so this step is one you want to get right.

Hold the ponytail with your hands and start twisting. I always twist in a clockwise direction and whether this has to do with the fact that I’m right-handed or not, I have no idea. I twist for approximately two full rotations. You’ll notice the bottom of the ponytail tightening against your head.

Hold your ponytail upright pointing to the sky.

Fold the end of your ponytail down. Basically you are tucking the end of your ponytail into the space between your head and the beginning part of your ponytail.

As you tuck the ends of the ponytail in, you’ll slowly roll your wadded-up ponytail to the left. I grip the seam between my ponytail and my head between my thumb and my four other fingers, and use my thumb to push the hair beneath in while rolling the hair on top in. You will feel the twist tightening against your scalp. Keep pushing and rolling your hair until it feels secure.

Use straight or bobby pins (depending on the thickness of your hair) to hold the hair in place and to separate the line that is created by your French twist.

Once you become practiced with these pins, you’ll find ways to conceal them through good placement, for example by hiding them just beneath the roll.  Just keep practicing.  If it’s not perfect it doesn’t matter.  Some of the sloppy ones look sexier in my opinion!

Now, get on a fabulous designer dress and go have a night to remember…

We never ever tire of smoky eyes in plums, purples, and lavenders, and thankfully Lilac season is here once again! Yay!!! Celebs like January Jones, of AMC’s Mad Men was seen sporting her beautiful lavender eyes, and told one of our BSW insiders she was loving her “I’m With The Band” Eyeshadow Kit from beth bender beauty. Apparently the paparazzi got so crazy she was swarmed in seconds. Must have been her lilac eyes.

Emily Blundt, and Mila Kunis were also spotted in Los Angeles with lavender and violet lids. “The pastel hue is bright and fun for spring, and it looks so good on every skin tone,” say celebrity makeup artist, beth bender. “Plus it’s a perfect excuse to add them to our spring collection of eyeshadow palettes, and gel liners,” says bender.

To get the look, bender suggests using a gel eyeliner in a violet, or plum and trace both the top and bottom lashline. Finish by smudging the liner and applying a dusting of violet, or lavender over the liner, and onto the eyelid. Shimmers work really well, and give the eyes a lovely pop.

Dianna Agron was not playing when it came to her ‘come hither me eyes’ at the 2010 FOX Upfront after party in New York City.  The focus was definitely on the eyes—but not in a smoky way. Instead she opted for 2 sets of lash strips layered on top of each other, carefully applied by her makeup artist.

The goal was for the lips to pick up on Dianna’s red dress, but still ensure the eyes had impact, and without a doubt they did! Medium black lashes were used to get this sexy effect, and before applying, they were trimmed so they did not extend beyond Dianna’s natural lashline.

“Stacking the lashes is definitely the key to creating this look on the eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist beth bender, who has lent her lash skills to many a super model backstage during fashion week. bender also says that applying a coat of mascara first, gives the bed of lashes even more density making them look even thicker.
