Thinking of liposuction as a way to help your body get back into shape? According to a study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery—Nearly 40 percent of doctors offering liposuction in Southern California have no specific surgical training, and this could be dangerous to patients.

We were shocked to find out that it is not illegal for doctors who are not surgeons to perform the procedure, and many of the doctors performing the surgery, says the Los Angeles Times, take a course or training session in the procedure. But, “such training is not required and is often inadequate,” according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Wow, that is extremely disturbing, and certainly room for concern.

The authors of the study are calling not for government regulation of liposuction, but for a greater effort to inform patients about who is, or is not qualified to perform various cosmetic procedures.

So how should you find a surgeon for liposuction, and get the results that you desire? To start you can contact the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Of course nothing is better than a recommendation from a family doctor, or friends who have had good results. Next, make an appointment for a consultation, and ask plenty of questions, like, “do you have privileges to perform this operation in a hospital or to admit a patient with complications?” “Is your operating room accredited by one of the three organizations that monitor for safety? And do you have malpractice insurance for this procedure?”

Any doctor who is completely comfortable performing this procedure should be able to answer these, and anything other questions with ease.
