THE FASHION & BEAUTY SCOOP: Derek Lam’s Fall 2010 “Myth of the West” collection paid homage to the modern cowgirl, with makeup and hair that reflected strength and femininity, all at once.

This runway show also marked Estée Lauder’s first fashion week collaboration, led by new creative makeup director Tom Pecheux. Backstage was a testing ground for the colors he created for Fall, a big departure from Lauder’s trademark neutrals, and straight into the high-impact color category. Their were a few bright green shadows and pretty fuchsia blushes in Pecheux’s kit, but the look at Derek Lam was all about the blues.

“With Derek’s show, we always try to break the rules,” Pecheux said of the dark copper lips and mix of royal blue and navy eye shadows that he swept from the lids all the way up into the eyebrows. “We didn’t want the makeup to match the clothes or be too ladylike. It’s more about making a statement and doing something totally unexpected.” Amen to that!

Pecheux used two shades, a navy and a royal blue, on the lids, with a metallic copper shadow along the lower lashlines, really very striking. “The navy eye creates a powerful look, but we are blending really well, so it’s a continuous wash, versus a graphic shape,” he told BeautyStyleWatch. The lips were spotted with lip color as a base, then brushed with the same copper shade used beneath the eyes. ” When you do strong eyes, you need a lip that balances them,” he said, using a lipstick in a tone that ties in to an aspect of the eyes will do that.” We couldn’t agree more, and totally loved this look!

THE 411 ON THE HAIR: “We’re going for a textured, whispy, very ethereal look,” said hair stylist Orlando Pita of the hair, as he spritze pieces with light hairspray, and brushed it through the hair. “It’s quite soft, we’re layering with hairspray, lettign it dry and then brushing it out. The effect on the runway will be soft and full of movement.”

And there you have it, another wild and fabulous look from two of our favorite artists at New York’s Fall Fashion Week 2010.

I didn’t think Estee Lauder had it in them but these eyes tell a different story. Bravo to Tom Pecheux for his outrageous and creative look.

Some of the best reviews I have read on fashion week in a long time.

I actually really love this look. I think the contrast of a strong blue eye with a coppery brown lip looks right, especially for this collection.

Obviously for everyday I would tone down a little and not go so high to brow bone but it is striking.

    Great post!

We agree! Thanks for the great comment Kevin.
