THE BEAUTY SCOOP: Makeup artist Pat McGrath and Hairstylist Garren delivered some very lovely hair and makeup yesterday at Anna Sui, “Anna was talking about arts and crafts, and lots of decoration,” said  McGrath, which was the inspiration behind the show with lots of layering, fabric, and patterns in the clothes, so the hair and makeup reflected that.

“For me, I see Biba in the face,” said McGrath, referring to the iconic London fashion shop, a hotbed for the mod fashion movement of the late 60s and early 70s. The accompanying ‘Biba Look’ was all about mini skirts, fresh faces and big round eyes. The makeup definitely made a statement, but shades stayed within the same cool tone, to add structure and smolder without being loud.

The makeup  focused on the eyes and lips. McGrath rimmed the models’ upper and lower lashlines with dark brown liner and then smudged it with a pointy brush. Mocha and chocolate brown shadows were blended on the eyelid and underneath to create a “circular effect” around the eyes. The lips were a mauvy-gray shade that Pat custom blended and applied with a brush. A very big departure from the usual red lips at past Anna Sui shows, but still her signature lip color of course.

The hair, and Garren’s only show this season, was super “silky, smooth, straight, and long to complement the clothes,” Garren said. He sprayed Garren New York Designing Spray Tonic on the hair, flat-ironed small sections, and brushed them through with a rat-tail comb.

“We went silky and straight this season, with a center part,” said Garren. “The intricate layering of the clothing and the patterns needed longer hair.” But two models got a different treatment, Agyness Deyn, the face of Anna Sui’s Rock Me Sweetly, walked in her now signature raven bob, while flame-haired Karen Elson, who opened the show, was given big, sexy curls.

Backstage Beauty Gone Wild: Derek Lam

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 18th February 2010

THE FASHION & BEAUTY SCOOP: Derek Lam’s Fall 2010 “Myth of the West” collection paid homage to the modern cowgirl, with makeup and hair that reflected strength and femininity, all at once.

This runway show also marked Estée Lauder’s first fashion week collaboration, led by new creative makeup director Tom Pecheux. Backstage was a testing ground for the colors he created for Fall, a big departure from Lauder’s trademark neutrals, and straight into the high-impact color category. Their were a few bright green shadows and pretty fuchsia blushes in Pecheux’s kit, but the look at Derek Lam was all about the blues.

“With Derek’s show, we always try to break the rules,” Pecheux said of the dark copper lips and mix of royal blue and navy eye shadows that he swept from the lids all the way up into the eyebrows. “We didn’t want the makeup to match the clothes or be too ladylike. It’s more about making a statement and doing something totally unexpected.” Amen to that!

Pecheux used two shades, a navy and a royal blue, on the lids, with a metallic copper shadow along the lower lashlines, really very striking. “The navy eye creates a powerful look, but we are blending really well, so it’s a continuous wash, versus a graphic shape,” he told BeautyStyleWatch. The lips were spotted with lip color as a base, then brushed with the same copper shade used beneath the eyes. ” When you do strong eyes, you need a lip that balances them,” he said, using a lipstick in a tone that ties in to an aspect of the eyes will do that.” We couldn’t agree more, and totally loved this look!

THE 411 ON THE HAIR: “We’re going for a textured, whispy, very ethereal look,” said hair stylist Orlando Pita of the hair, as he spritze pieces with light hairspray, and brushed it through the hair. “It’s quite soft, we’re layering with hairspray, lettign it dry and then brushing it out. The effect on the runway will be soft and full of movement.”

And there you have it, another wild and fabulous look from two of our favorite artists at New York’s Fall Fashion Week 2010.

Longer Lashes and Laser Treatments at Fashion Week NYC

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 18th February 2010

Bryant park, as usual, was filled to the gills with designers, celebrities, fashionistas, and peons (porto-potties). The gift bags, are considered the “golden ring” in carousel terms. This year the gift bags were fleeced with recycled gold tissue paper!  Have no fear, the gold was to be found at Event Parties!  There were more services than products being promoted!  And one of the better services was a prescription for Latisse (only given after a consult with a licensed medical doctor)

Beauty expert Jennifer Kandemir hosted the Latisse event at Dr. Yagudin’s office on Madison Avenue in New York City.  After a short consultation with Dr. Yagudin, I actually held my golden prescription to longer lashes!!!  I felt like “Charley” with his golden ticket into Willy Wonka‘s Chocolate Factory…One tiny drop along your lash line every night before bed and your eyelashes will grow to amazing lengths in just 4-6 weeks!  Both of The Bender Sisters have already seen results with their prescriptions.  (continued use is necessary to maintain long & healthy lashes)

Dr. Yuriy Yagudin is the founder of Dermacare Medical PC and is a Board Certified Laser Surgeon and Internal Medicine Physician who received his first medical degree from the former Soviet Union in 1993 as well as from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000.  As soon as you step off of the elevator and directly into his office space there is a calming sensation in the air. The staff was so patient with this crowd of cheeky fashionistas and the fashionuhh-uhhs! -There were many! His laser abilities and other facial procedures include  Titan by Cutera, resurfacing the skin, injectables such as juvederm & botox, microdermabrasion, laser tattoo removal and many more.

So, if you happen to live in Manhattan, or near by…this is the Medical Office to visit for all of your beauty needs!

Carnie Wilson’s Constant Weight Battle

Posted by Te-see on 18th February 2010

The beautiful and talented singer Carnie Wilson has battled being over weight her entire life.  As you may know, 10 years ago she had gastric bypass surgery to help her get her weight down and stay down.  In 1999 weighing in at 300 lbs., Carnie dropped 150 lbs. in 16 months following this procedure.  She looked amazing!

Cut to 2010, 10 years & 2 kids later…Carnie is struggling again to lose weight from her second pregnancy.  She loves food but eats much less than most and still can’t keep it off.  After her appearance on The Dr. Oz Show she was shocked to discover that she weighed in at 218 lbs. which Dr. Oz defined as “morbidly obese and prediabetic.” Not exactly what the 41 year old mother/singer wanted to hear…Unfortunately, 1 out of 7 people who under go weight loss surgery gain all of their weight back…Gastric surgery does not cure the psychological issues that coincide with weight gain.  These need to be addressed as well.

So, what is Carnie’s game plan…well, like so many women I know…she hates to exercise but is trying hard to follow Dr. Oz’s diet which includes 30 minutes of exercise a day or 10,000 steps a day!  In 3 weeks Carnie has lost 6 lbs. and is very happy.  Her dream goal is to “grow 4 inches taller.” (isn’t that every short girls dream…?)  But in Carnie’s real world she would like to weigh 150 – 170 lbs…The Bender Sisters wish her much luck and look forward to seeing her reach her goal!
