Carolina Herrera’s show was a beautiful way to begin the day. When we arrived backstage everyone was already buzzing, the crowd was happy, and instantly we were feeling it too. Makeup artist Diane Kendal and hairstylist Orlando Pita teamed up to create the beauty look, and could not have been nicer when it came to answering any of our questions regarding the look.

The Fashion Look: Elegant Jackie O wear for the sophisticated society lady, and those who want to be one. Floral prints in deep reds, and okra gave the collection a feminine confidence that was carried over to the beauty look for Herrera’s Fall 2010 collection.

Makeup highlighted a 70′s-inspired glam smoky eye, with accented cheekbones and neutral lips. “We did something a little unexpected here, I used a lip pencil on the eye area to get a true, deep color,” says Kendal. Hair emphasized smooth, clean lines with a center part that cascaded behind the ear and down the back for a sculptured flowing look. The Nails glimmered in a milk chocolate neutral, finished with a super glossy topcoat for the glint of a freshly manicured hand. So fifth Avenue. “It’s all about the classic lady and looking elegant,” says Valinoti. No doubt.

To create the look Diane used Indian Ink and Fig eye shadows that were layered on the lids, into the crease, and finished with a sweep of nude pigment powder across the lids for sparkle. Night Moth Lip Pencil was used on the top and bottom lash lines for depth and definition. Lips were prepped with foundation to neutralize the natural color, before applying a new pinky nude lipglass for Fall called Subtle Romance, which gave a slight shine that looked just perfect.

We definitely loved the hair and makeup, since the look at Herrera has often been a little too formal for our beauty taste. This season, it was young, fresh, and current, and something we would totally wear. The makeup inspired by photographer Sara Moon’s images for Cacharel ads in the ’70s, was everything, and more. Dark, beautiful hues from those ads that Kendal used to create sultry, smoky eyes that looked romantic, and super sexy.

The hair was beautiful too with Orlando Pita softened things by letting the hair down this time. He worked a touch of Moroccan Oil Styling Cream through damp hair, blow-dried it straight, created a side part, and tucked the sides behind the ears, which he pinned in place under the back of the hair to keep them in place as the girls walked the runway. “Hair that’s loose and not too perfect looks so fresh with an evening gown,” said Pita, referring to the embellished dresses that Herrera sent down the runway. Everything about the show looked, and felt effortless, from the fashion, to the beauty, and of course the magic that was felt, from the moment we arrived.

Backstage Beauty: Marc Jacobs Goes For Real Women This Season

Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 16th February 2010

The Marc Jacobs’ Fall Fashion show was anything but flashy when it came to makeup, hair, and music of seasons’ past. Models wore very little makeup, and walked to a slow, acoustically memorizing version of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, but all eyes were on the clothing, and nothing else. He also chose to cast mostly unknown models, many of whom had never even walked a runway, and then, he added two girls to the show who weren’t even models at all, just 2 fabulous gals he grabbed from the streets of New York to walk his famous runway. There were no celebrities sitting in the front row, and surprisingly it was one of our favorite shows this season.

“I was inspired by the film La Vie des Autres. I wanted the models to have a dirty look as if the hair and makeup had been slept in,” said designer Marc Jacobs, who specifically requested Barbarella lipstick to be used on the models’ lips. Francois Nars, Founder and Creative Director of Nars Cosmetics who created the look for the show said it was “a look you might see on a girl from the East Village or St. Germain des Pres, an existentialist with a modern twist.” He used his fingers to apply the makeup and achieve a worn, faded effect to the makeup, as if the models had been out all night the evening before. Love, love, love!

Hairstylist Guido when asked why Jacobs went with unknown beauties responded by saying “When you don’t recognize the faces on the runway, there’s more of an anonymous feel to the show, you really just focus on the clothes.” Makeup artist François Nars added, “Marc wanted an intellectual type of beauty for this show. These girls aren’t glamazons, they’re a bit more special and unique. You’re able to get a sense of their personalities.”

To get the look he used a pale lilac shadow on the lids, Nars D. Gorgeous, black eyeliner, Eyeliner Pencil in Black Moon, then he swept on Enchanted Blush, a peachy cream blush, new for Summer 2010, and on the lips Barbarella Lipstick, a pale peachy-coral lipstick. For the lashes Nars used old tubes of mascara that had dried out a bit to purposefully give them a clumpy out-all-night and I haven’t slept a wink look.
