When Is Thin Too Thin?
Posted by The Girls in the BSW Beauty Dept. on 11th February 2010
As you know the fashion world has been getting a lot of flack for using models that are too skinny, and as a result there is talk that some concrete changes may be made. In New York City last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, a non-profit trade association, held a panel discussion called “The Beauty of Health: Resizing the Sample Size.” Panelists including designer Zac Posen, model Doutzen Kroes, famous for the Victoria’s Secret show, as well as hundreds of runway shows, and casting agent James Scully, all shared their experiences on working in the industry.
Kroes, who has a body that many of us would call amazing, says that even she is considered too heavy for the runway. I can’t even imagine anyone thinking she is too heavy! “I never fit the sample size, and I was told to lose weight,” she says. “I look at the Versace shows of the ’90s and there was diversity—voluptuous girls, skinny girls. Because there are naturally skinny girls, I’m just not one of them.”And thank goodness for that! A little meat on the bones is what we would like to see. Bring back the 90′s and quick!!
Kroes has appeared in Allure and other magazines, and is stunning. Most panelists seemed to agree that instituting an age limit on models would be a good place to start, but the good news was they all seemed to be fed up, and were on the same page towards making a solid change.
We will keep our fingers crossed, and keep you posted on any changes.
