Joanna Schlip had only 20 minutes to create this sultry, 70′s look on Christina Applegate, but being the seasoned pro that she is, it was no problem at all. When I spoke to Joanna she was pretty specific about the look she was going for and said that the minute she saw Christina’s dramatic, sweeping gown designed by Basil Soda she was reminded of Elizabeth Taylor, “I had a vision of Elizabeth herself, and imagined her wearing it” said Joanna, and the rest as we say is “beauty history”.

Inspired by the vintage glamour of the navy stunner she made sure to create a look that was modern, and yet different from everyone else. With Christina’s hair pulled back in a chic chignon, Joanna was able to play up her eyes with a sexy retro smoky look, and keep everything else fresh and soft, all the way down to her soft pink lips.

To create the radiant glow that Joanna was going for, she prepped Christina’s skin with Clarins Water Comfort One Step Cleanser, next she applied Clarins Multi-Active Day Moisturizer, and finished with one of my favorites, Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. This balm is the “beauty bomb”, and will wake up anyone’s skin in an instant! ”

“Christina’s skin looked beautiful. Like a 20 year old”, added Joanna, “so I kept her face mostly bare with a light wash of Clarins True Radience Foundation, and a light dusting of Clarins Loose Powder in Translucent.”

Once her skin was done, Joanna started working on her eyes. She began with a cat eye but decided to remove the tip and give the eyes a more rounded look. She used the Clarins Colour Quartet for eyes in “So Chic” to add some depth and bring out Christina’s beautiful green eyes, and smoked out the bottom for added drama.

She used MAC lashes to finish the eyes before moving onto the cheeks and lips. This is a gal who loves, loves, loves, lash strips, and said she would have no problem doing up to three at a time on each eye depending on the client. “It’s all about the drama when it comes to the eyes doll”, says Joanna, and being a lash guru myself I totally agreed. A Clarins black eye pencil was applied to the top and bottom lashline, and inside rim, and three coats of Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara in Black for eyes that could not be ignored.

Cheeks had just a touch of color using Clarins Instant Sun Light Shimmer Palette and applying to the apple of Christina’s cheeks, and sweeping up to the hairline for a healthy, peachy-pink glow. The lips were beautiful, and her pink shade was created with Clarins Lip Definer in Bay Rose, and a hint of Clarins Colour Quench Lip Balm in Rose Pink to finish this very modern, yet retro red carpet sensation. Our thanks to Joanna for being so sweet after such a long day, and still sounding bubbly and excited about the day.

Get Mary-Louise Parker’s Look From the Red Carpet

Posted by Beth on 21st September 2009

Hollywood was one busy town yesterday with the 2009 Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre. From the wee hours of the morning until late in the afternoon celebrity makeup artists, hair stylists, and stylists were creating gorgeous looks on attendee’s, nominee’s, and presenter’s. Everything from coiffed hair styles, to loose updos, and lots of smoky eyes. The gowns were gorgeous and there was a lot of color.

One of my favorite looks last evening was Mary-Louise Parker’s, created by celebrity artist Tina Turnbow who works with Mary-Louise on a regular basis. I spoke to Tina on her way back to New York and got the scoop on her inspiration behind this very beautiful look.

To play up the colors in Mary-Louise’s dress, Tina brought out her best features with a dramatic yet classic smoky eye, blushing pink cheeks and nude lips. “Mary-Louise’s skin looked beautiful and her porcelain complexion gave me a gorgeous canvas to work with. Once I took a look at the gown designed by Zac Posen which was in deep purple and indigo tones, and the accessories which were in gunmetal, I decided on a gorgeous opal-toned smoky eye in purples and navy’s using Maybelline’s New York Expert Wear Stylish Smokes in Amethyst Smokes.” I used all four shades in the palette to play up her eyes and add drama.

“I then followed with Maybelline’s New Line Express Blackened Sapphire 908 eyeliner and applied to the upper and lower lash lines.  To showcase the gorgeous jewel tones of the shadows, I only applied one coat of Maybelline Colossal Lash Mascara in Classic Black.”

For her face, and because her skin looked so amazing, Tina added foundation only where needed. “I kept her face looking pristine by applying Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse in Classic Ivory – with touches of Maybelline New York Dream Mousse Concealer in Light under the eyes and to the tops of the cheeks to give a contoured look.”

To compliment her ivory skin, Tina brushed on Maybelline New York Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in Gentle Pink to the apples of the cheeks to give the look of a soft natural flush. She was loving the mineral makeup and was very happy with the results on Mary-Louise.

To finish the look and keep the focus on the eyes, she applied a neutral lip. “I lined the entire mouth with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast, and then finished by applying Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Nearly There. I gave her skin a soft dusting of Maybelline New York Mineral Power Illuminator in Nude and brushed along her collar bones, arms and legs for a red carpet glow.

And there you have it. A fabulous red carpet look created by a red carpet pro! Thank you Tina for your step-by-step tips on how to get this gorgeous look.
