How To Create Smoky Eyeliner in Soft Lilac

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 30th September 2009

Not every lined eye that makes a beauty statement needs to be dark in order to do so. Just look at the always beautiful Jessica Stroup, seen here at the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party, who shows us that a heavily pigmented shadow in Lilac can be just as dramatic.

Jessica Stroup in Sexy Lilac EyelinerTo get the look, makeup artist beth bender of beth bender beauty suggests wetting a tapered eyeliner brush first and then dipping into your shadow. To apply, start at the outer eye and move brush along the top lashline, and then below the bottom. For a thicker line add more color to the liner already there, extend beyond eye, and up for an elongated look.

To create a cat eye in Lilac beth recommends using her Cat Eyeliner Stencil and finish by adding an eyeliner sealant so the color stays on for hours. For extra definition you can apply a tight black liner to the top and bottom, and smudge slightly. benefit’s BADgal liner waterproof in black is a favorite of beth’s, that also happens to be a big favorite of mine as well.

Posted by Te-see on 29th September 2009

best eyelash conditioner

Looking for strong, healthy lashes…well look no further girls!  I found a combination that rocks my world and my lashes have never looked better.

Most mascaras contain tar and other harsh ingredients that can harm your lashes.  The end result is brittle, fragile and loss of lashes.  Well, thanks to Jane Iredale’s Purelash Extender & Conditioner your lashes have a fighting chance.  This rockin’ conditioner can be worn alone or under mascara and contains no petroleum products, shellac or irritants.

Create Smoky Eyes With Burgundy’s & Plums

Posted by Ingrid on 25th September 2009

At BeautyStyleWatch we are usually not huge fans of makeup that matches the clothing, but at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Mila Kunis looked amazing, and made new believers out of all of us. Wearing an extremely flirty burgundy dress, she paired her eyes with a coordinating burgundy shadow and her eyes were gorgeous.

celebrity artist beth bender shares her tips on creating Mila Kunis's burgundy eyes

To try deep plum or burgundy colored lids, beth bender of beth bender beauty suggests choosing a shimmery finish and applying the color with your fingertips.“This is one of my favorite ways to apply shimmers, and the oil from you hands, combined with the dewiness of the eyelids once you’ve applied an eye cream will keep it looking sheer, and not too heavy.”says beth.

If you desire a little more contour in the crease of your eyes you can add a contrasting color like a cobalt blue or a deep-blue violet. Try one of the newest smoky eye kits from the beth bender beauty Fall 2009 Collection in Most Wanted or Good Girl, Gone Bad.

Beth suggests using the smoky eye stencil included in both kits to create sexy  smoky eyes worthy of any red carpet.

Behind the Scenes at the 2009 Emmys

Posted by Te-see on 25th September 2009

2009 Emmy's This year Beth and I got Elaine Aradillas writer/reporter from People Magazine “Red Carpet Ready” for the 2009 Emmy Awards held at the Nokia Theater.  Elaine got to hob nob in the green room with all of the Celebrities…we were so00 jealous:)!!!

Here is a re-cap of how our Beauty Team got her ready for this star studded evening. Leticia Rodriguez, Celebrity Esthetician & creator of the Pursue Skin Resurfacing Peel, wanted Elaine’s skin smooth as glass so when Beth applied her makeup it would go on easily.  In order to achieve this Leticia first prepped her skin with an Alphy Hydroxy Toner and then applied her famous Skin Resurfacing Peel. This shed Elaine’s dead topical cells away and the end result was glowing magnificent skin.  A perfect combo for any Red Carpet Event.

With her skin prepped and glowing, Beth was ready to work her makeup magic on Elaine’s face.  After asking Elaine the color of her dress and how she liked her eyes they decided on gold & bronze smoky eyes using Beth’s “Get in Line” SGB Eyeliner & Stencil Kit.  She proudly stated that “she was from Texas and liked everything big!” Beth mixed the gold & sunkissed gold then applied it directly to her lids. She then used a blender brush to sweep the coppery-bronze shade from the SGB Palette into the contour of her eye, making sure to blend really well.

Beth highlighted her brow bone with the light gold shadow from her SGB kit and then added a touch of the sunkissed gold shadow above the crease again blending really well.  “Elaine loves the Marilyn Monroe vibe and even though she already has long beautiful lashes we added a few in the outer corners to make them look extremely sexy and even more eye popping.” But first Beth created her Marilyn “cat eye” and finished with one coat of Covergirl ’s Lashblast Mascara in black.  There was no way Elaine’s eyes would go unnoticed!

It was going to be a long day at the Emmy’s so Beth used Covergirl & Olay’s new cream blush in Mulberry.  She applied it with her fingers blending the color up into her hairline.  The weather was a tad on the warm side that day so Beth set her cheeks with Jane Iredale’s warm pink mineral blush to ensure longer lasting color and a touch of soft pink color on her lips to keep the emphasis on Elaine’s eyes.

Beth sent her off with powder, lipstick & gloss for touch ups.  Elaine was “Red Carpet Ready” thanks to Leticia and Beth:)

Get Christina Applegate’s Look, The 2009 Emmy’s

Posted by Beth on 21st September 2009

Joanna Schlip had only 20 minutes to create this sultry, 70’s look on Christina Applegate, but being the seasoned pro that she is, it was no problem at all. When I spoke to Joanna she was pretty specific about the look she was going for and said that the minute she saw Christina’s dramatic, sweeping gown designed by Basil Soda she was reminded of Elizabeth Taylor, “I had a vision of Elizabeth herself, and imagined her wearing it” said Joanna, and the rest as we say is “beauty history”.

Inspired by the vintage glamour of the navy stunner she made sure to create a look that was modern, and yet different from everyone else. With Christina’s hair pulled back in a chic chignon, Joanna was able to play up her eyes with a sexy retro smoky look, and keep everything else fresh and soft, all the way down to her soft pink lips.

Get Christina Applegate's Look Created By Joanna Schlip for the 2009 Emmy's

To create the radiant glow that Joanna was going for, she prepped Christina’s skin with Clarins Water Comfort One Step Cleanser, next she applied Clarins Multi-Active Day Moisturizer, and finished with one of my favorites, Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. This balm is the “beauty bomb”, and will wake up anyone’s skin in an instant! ”

“Christina’s skin looked beautiful. Like a 20 year old”, added Joanna, “so I kept her face mostly bare with a light wash of Clarins True Radience Foundation, and a light dusting of Clarins Loose Powder in Translucent.”

Once her skin was done, Joanna started working on her eyes. She began with a cat eye but decided to remove the tip and give the eyes a more rounded look. She used the Clarins Colour Quartet for eyes in “So Chic” to add some depth and bring out Christina’s beautiful green eyes, and smoked out the bottom for added drama.

She used MAC lashes to finish the eyes before moving onto the cheeks and lips. This is a gal who loves, loves, loves, lash strips, and said she would have no problem doing up to three at a time on each eye depending on the client. “It’s all about the drama when it comes to the eyes doll”, says Joanna, and being a lash guru myself I totally agreed. A Clarins black eye pencil was applied to the top and bottom lashline, and inside rim, and three coats of Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara in Black for eyes that could not be ignored.

Cheeks had just a touch of color using Clarins Instant Sun Light Shimmer Palette and applying to the apple of Christina’s cheeks, and sweeping up to the hairline for a healthy, peachy-pink glow. The lips were beautiful, and her pink shade was created with Clarins Lip Definer in Bay Rose, and a hint of Clarins Colour Quench Lip Balm in Rose Pink to finish this very modern, yet retro red carpet sensation. Our thanks to Joanna for being so sweet after such a long day, and still sounding bubbly and excited about the day.

Get Mary-Louise Parker’s Look From the Red Carpet

Posted by Beth on 21st September 2009

Hollywood was one busy town yesterday with the 2009 Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre. From the wee hours of the morning until late in the afternoon celebrity makeup artists, hair stylists, and stylists were creating gorgeous looks on attendee’s, nominee’s, and presenter’s. Everything from coiffed hair styles, to loose updos, and lots of smoky eyes. The gowns were gorgeous and there was a lot of color.

One of my favorite looks last evening was Mary-Louise Parker’s, created by celebrity artist Tina Turnbow who works with Mary-Louise on a regular basis. I spoke to Tina on her way back to New York and got the scoop on her inspiration behind this very beautiful look.

Get Mary-Louise Parker's Look At 2009 Emmy's

To play up the colors in Mary-Louise’s dress, Tina brought out her best features with a dramatic yet classic smoky eye, blushing pink cheeks and nude lips. “Mary-Louise’s skin looked beautiful and her porcelain complexion gave me a gorgeous canvas to work with. Once I took a look at the gown designed by Zac Posen which was in deep purple and indigo tones, and the accessories which were in gunmetal, I decided on a gorgeous opal-toned smoky eye in purples and navy’s using Maybelline’s New York Expert Wear Stylish Smokes in Amethyst Smokes.” I used all four shades in the palette to play up her eyes and add drama.

“I then followed with Maybelline’s New Line Express Blackened Sapphire 908 eyeliner and applied to the upper and lower lash lines.  To showcase the gorgeous jewel tones of the shadows, I only applied one coat of Maybelline Colossal Lash Mascara in Classic Black.”

For her face, and because her skin looked so amazing, Tina added foundation only where needed. “I kept her face looking pristine by applying Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse in Classic Ivory – with touches of Maybelline New York Dream Mousse Concealer in Light under the eyes and to the tops of the cheeks to give a contoured look.”

To compliment her ivory skin, Tina brushed on Maybelline New York Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush in Gentle Pink to the apples of the cheeks to give the look of a soft natural flush. She was loving the mineral makeup and was very happy with the results on Mary-Louise.

To finish the look and keep the focus on the eyes, she applied a neutral lip. “I lined the entire mouth with Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Liner in Toast, and then finished by applying Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Nearly There. I gave her skin a soft dusting of Maybelline New York Mineral Power Illuminator in Nude and brushed along her collar bones, arms and legs for a red carpet glow.

And there you have it. A fabulous red carpet look created by a red carpet pro! Thank you Tina for your step-by-step tips on how to get this gorgeous look.

Get Sexy Bronze Eyes Like A Pro

Posted by Ingrid on 20th September 2009

Jennifer Garner is no newbie when it comes to smoky eyes. She has had her eyes done by the best of the best when it comes to makeup artists, but, “what’s a girl to do when she doesn’t have the luxury of an on call artist?” Just ask beth bender of beth bender beauty and beauty editor of BSW. Most of my clients all have a Get in Line Smoky Eye and Eyeliner Kit that they use whenever they can’t get me. It really is the next best thing when you want to do a smoky eye or a cat eye.

Especially with this season’s trends being more about naughty than nice. Who doesn’t want a sexy cat eyeliner, or sultry smoky eye, both of which can be very, very, naughty. And while we just adore Jennifer Garner’s girl-next-door looks here at BSW, we were all over her sultry, sexy eyeshadow at The Invention of Lying premiere in Toronto.

Get Jennifer Garner's Sexy Smoky Eyes

To try the look, beth suggests covering the eyelids with a coppery metallic shadow, like the SGB Palette, use the smoky eye stencil for the proper placement, and then finish by dusting a gunmetal gray, like Double-O-Silver, both from beth bender beauty in the crease and at the lashline. Sounds easy, and it is.

Now go and create some naughty eyes please!

xx

Dick Page for Shiseido, Get the Look from Zero + Maria Cornejo

Posted by The Girls at BSW on 18th September 2009

Shiseido’s Artistic Director Dick Page has been keeping himself very busy at Fashion Week in NYC. Armed with an expert team of artists, and Shiseido’s line of newest beauty products for 2010 and fall 2009, he has been creating beautiful looks for many of the shows featured at this years spring fashion shows.

The look for the Zero + Maria Cornejo show was in Dick’s words “Leftover makeup” look and “touch of sun”.

Zero + Maria Cornejo Spring Fashion Show New York 2010

Zero + Maria Cornejo Spring Fashion Show New York 2010

Starting with the cheeks, Dick used the Luminizing Satin Face Color Tea Rose (RS302) from the Spring 2010 Collection and applied on the models’ bare skin, just on the cheeks and nose to give a sun-kissed look.

For the eyes, Dick lined the top and bottom lash line with the Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Brown (BR602) from the 2009 Fall Makeup Collection.  To give the look a little bit of slip, he applied a dab of the Accentuating Color Stick in Champagne Flush (S3) underneath the eyes. Once the lashes were curled, Dick applied a touch of the Perfect Mascara in Black (BK901) from the Fall 2009 Makeup Collection.

For the eyebrows, Dick used the Natural Eyebrow Pencil from the Fall 2009 Makeup Collection only if the eyebrows were very light, and brushed up the hairs simultaneously.

Lips were done with Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer Lipstick in Pout (RS326) from the Spring 2010 Collection. It was carefully applied like a lip liner and patted to fill in the rest of the lip creating a soft, translucent look.

Another successful look, another successful show!
