Believe it or not, I was a tomboy way back when…all of my friends were boys except for one. Susan Lawrence lived around the corner from me and we were best buds because we both liked playing with dolls and hanging with boys. Unfortunately, Susan was not as athletic as me so she never played sports…Oh, well…can’t be good at everything. Boys were always so much fun and you never had to worry about them saying mean things behind your back.
I can still remember hanging upside down on the monkey bars with my dress bellowing over my head without a care in the world. Then 2nd grade came along and the rules changed. Principal Lulu Chapin allowed the girls to wear pants. Yay!!! We were making progress here…It was the happiest day of my life and I never looked back. Life was so simple then. The only thing I had to worry about was if “The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family” were going to be repeats on Friday night television.
On our block all the kids would play Tag, Hot Beans and Butter, Ring-a-Leavio, Mother May I, Duck- Duck and Simon Says. We’d be wearing short-shorts, wedge platform shoes and pony tails. The boys had on their Levis 501 jeans and converse sneakers. As soon as it got dark all the moms would open the front door and yell out our names. I miss that time but feel so fortunate to have such wonderful memories. Although times have changed I can only hope that my kids have childhood memories that last them a life time as well.
Fashion is constantly doing a 360 and eventually all styles come back in one way or another. (Some should never come back, but that’s another post…) Any how, now I know what my friend’s mom meant by “never give any of your clothes away.” Who knew she’d be right…
So, all my hip clothes are safely stored for the day they are back in style and my daughter can wear them! Maybe even I can…if I’m not too old…

(Charly, Te-see, Beth in Venice, Florida…just back from Disney World…what gave it away…?)
Unfortunately, I didn’t save my favorite Danskin Navy Blue overalls that I’m wearing with my favorite denim jacket. Bummer…
Peace, Love, and childhood memories…

Glitter and shimmer have gotten a bad rap over the years way back when many disco- queens went a little overboard, but it can be completely glamorous when done right, and the best part…it takes seconds to do. Just look at Cameron Diaz who does shimmer right, and you can too. Lighter colors look best and you can use your fingers to apply, or a medium eyeshadow brush. Rub a champagne or warm gold shimmer shadow on your eyelids, and dab a little at your inner corners and on your brow bones. The color will catch the light and make your eyes sparkle. Oooh…..so pretty. Curl your lashes and apply a black mascara on the top and bottom and try to keep your lips on the lighter side. A pale pink or nude with a slight shimmer works best.

There are some nights when you have to have the drama, and a few coats of mascara just won’t do. That’s when it’s time to whip out the black shadow, a la Alicia Keys and give yourself a rockin’ cat eye. The quickest way to get them is by using a cat eye stencil. Just place the stencil over your eye and fill in with color. If you want a thicker line like Alicia move it up and fill in with more color. Once you’ve done both eyes which takes all of two minutes, you can use a black waterproof eyeliner and fill in the rim on the bottom of eyes.

A beautiful bronze color is up there with Manolo’s, and Jimmy Choo’s, everyone wants the sun-kissed look and it’s nice to know you don’t have to be a self-tanner whiz to get it. To get a sexy sun-kissed complexion like Jessica Biel’s, apply an oil-free tinted moisturizer that is a few shades deeper than your natural skin tone. This will add warmth without looking overdone because of its sheer consistancy. Then to finish use a bronzer stick or powder to add more color to the bridge of your nose, chin and your cheekbones. Sweep a touch of peach blush on the apples of cheeks, and dab some shimmer at the inner corners of your eyes. A concealer brush works great for this. Guess what?…You’re red carpet ready.

It’s pretty much a proven fact in Hollywood that gorgeous waves help keep you off the “Worst Dressed” list. I guess the critics are just crazy for the waves. Eva Longoria doesn’t mess around when it comes to her mane, and she always looks beautiful on the red carpet. To get loose curls like Eva’s, rub a bit of mousse on damp hair and blow dry with a round brush. Once the hair is dry, wrap one section at a time around a two-inch curling iron. The best way to do this is by wrapping the hair around the outside of barrel and not underneath the clamp the way you usually would. Then, separate and lift the curls while misting on a light-hold finishing spray.

Carrie Underwood likes to do up her eyes country style, and so far we have loved every smoky eye and cat eye we have seen. She also has a makeup artist who knows that neutral-but-pretty makeup doesn’t compete for camera attention and it makes all skin tones look more vibrant. Sexy smoky eyes like Carrie’s need a blush in a peach shade swept over the apples of cheeks, and blended up towards the temples. The lips should be soft as well. Line and fill them in with a peachy-coral lip pencil and finish with shimmery gloss. You can dab some in the center of lips to add fullness to your mouth.
